Lighting and extinguishing gas.-Apparatus for operating a gas cock, on an increase ot pressure in the mains, comprises a piston a, Fig. 2, forming preferably part of a liquid-seal valve or bellows and carrying the gas cock, an exit pipe e which acts as a guide, and preferably a depending guiderod g. The gas cock is provided with a perforated or slotted hollow plug d<1>, Fig. 3, having a peripheral groove d" with which a set-screw engages, and is operated with ratchet-gearing l, Fig. 2, the pawl m being preferably connected by a rod o to the casing or to a weight p resting on the bottom of the casing. The piston e may be weighted by washers, shot, &c., and its upward movement may be limited by the pipe e contacting with a stop on the Bunsen tube, or by adjustable studs or a circular flange contacting with the lid b<1> of the casing. A pipe that is uncovered when the piston rises may be provided for the escape of the surplus gas.
