The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render the same more eflicient and durable in use and less expensive to manufacture.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is betterunderstood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
in which I have shown a diagrammatic sectional view of an apparatus embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing by numeral, 1 denotes a suitable base or support formed adjacent to one end, with a cylindrical casing 2 closed at its upper end by a diaphragm 3, which is held in place by a ring 4, screwed or otherwise secured to said casing. Secured upon said ring 4 is a bracket 5, in the arms of which is fulcrumed, as at 6, a lever 7, having at one of its ends an adjustably-mounted weight 8 and at its opposite and shorter end 9 an adjusting-screw 10, the purpose of which will presently appear. Secured to the upper side of the diaphragm 3 by a screw 11 is a cap or block 12, havingaknifed edge 13, which is engaged with the long arm of the lever 7 as shown. The chamber 14, formed by the casing2 and diaphragm 3, has a suitable waterpipe connection 15, by means of which it is in communication with the water-space in a steam-boiler or with any suitable source of fluid-supply. The lower end of the screw 11 coacts with the upper end of the stem 16 of a valve 17, which is mounted in a casing 18, screwed into the base 1 and in communication with said chamber 14. Said valve 17 is held normally upon its seat 19 by the lever 7 hearing upon the cap 12 of the diaphragm 3, and
it is adapted to be forced to an opened position when the weight of the lever is removed by means of a coil-spring 20, which surrounds its stem 16 and is confined between a'stop 21 upon said stem and a shoulder 22, formed in said casing. The opening'or bore in said casing 18 is of suflicient size to permit water in the chamber 14 to pass through the same and into a suitable outlet-pipe connection 23 when the valve 17 is raised from its seat 19. Upon one end of the base 1 is a screw-stop 24, which is adapted to limit the downward movement of the lever 7 under'the action of the weight. Mounted adjacent to the opposite end of the base 1 is a tubular guide 24 in the form of a cylinder having its lower base 25 secured upon the support 1 and its upper end closed by a screwcap 26. Within the tubular guide 24 is a cylinder 27, in which is adapted to reciprocate a piston 28, secured upon the lower end of a piston-rod 29, which projects through and slides in the cap 26 of said guide. Said tube 27 has its lower end projecting into an opening formed in the collar 25 and slightly outturned, as shown. The upper end of said tube 27 is supported by a head 27, which is formed with openings 27 for the passage of water therethrough. Said head is also provided with stop-rod 27 which serves to limit the upward movement of the plunger or piston 28. Upon the upper and outer end of said piston-rod is mounted a hollow weight 30, which is adapted to telescope said guide 24, as clearly shown in the drawing. Said weight has upon its upper end a hook or eye 31, to which one end of a chain, cable, or other flexible connection 32 is attached. Said connection passes over suitable guide-pulleys -33 and has its opposite end attached to the weighted end 34 of a lever 35, to which a damper 36 is secured. Said damper may be of any construction and may be mounted in any desired manner. The piston 28 is provided at its lower end with suitable packing 37, and opening into the lower end of the cylinder 27 beneath said piston is an inlet-pipe connection 38, which is connected by a pipe 39 to .the pipe 23, leading from the valve-casing 18.
To permit any water which works above the piston 28 to escape from the cylinder 27, its upper end is open, as shown, and a waste-pipe 40 is provided in the base 1 and has its upper end opening into said guide 24 and its lower end opening into the enlarged funnel-shaped end 41 of a waste-pipe 42.
Mounted in the base 1 beneath the short end 9 of the lever 7 is a valve-casing 43, in which is formed a valve-seat 44. Coacting with said seat is a valve 45, having its enlarged stem 46 slidably mounted in said casing 43, as shown, and projecting through the upper end of the same and into the path of the adjusting-screw 10 upon the said end 9 of the lever 7. The space or bore in the casing 43 above the valve-seat 44 is in communication with a waste-pipe 47, which has its lower end opening into the funnel-shaped upper end 41 of the waste-pipe 42. Said space below the valve-seat 44 is in communication with the water-pipe 39 through a connectingpipe 48. The valve 45 is'adapted to be held in its closed position by the screw 10, bearing upon the upper end of its stem 46, and to be opened by the upward pressure of the water in the pipe 48 when said screw 10 is disengaged from said valve-stem.
The lever 7 may be operated by any suitable device controlled by the steam-pressure in a boiler or the like. As shown, a chamber or casing is provided and has its lower end in communication with the steam-space in the boiler through the connection 51. In the upper end of the casing 50, which is closed by a screw-cap 52, is mounted a diaphragm 53, which has secured to its upper side a cap or plate 54, formed with a stem 55, which projects through and slides in an opening in the cap 52. The upper end of said stem en gages the under side of the lever 7 and is adapted to operate or elevate the same when the pressure in the chamber or casing 50 comes great enough to move the diaphragm 53.
The operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following brief statement. When the pressure in the boiler passes a predetermined point, which is controlled by adjusting the weight 8 upon the lever 7, the diaphragm 53 and its stem 55 will be elevated to swing the long end of the lever 7 upwardly. This movement of the lever will simultaneously close the valve 45 and open the valve 17, the spring 20 forcing the latter 11pwardly. The water from the pipe 15 will pass through the chamber 14, valve-casing 18, pipes 23, 39, and 38, and into the cylinder 27 beneath the piston 28. which will be forced upwardly, carrying the Weight 30 with it, and the latter through the connection 33 and lever 35 reversing the position of the damper 36. When the pressure in the steam-boiler lowers, the parts will return to their normal positions shown in the drawing, the valve 17 closing and the valve 45 opening under the pressure or weight of the water in the cylinder 27. This water is thus permitted to discharge through the pipes 38 39 48, the valve 45, and the pipe 46.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

In combination with a steam-pressure-actuated mechanism, a lever operated thereby, a water pressure actuated damper operating mechanism, a water-supply pipe therefor, a pressure-chamber with which said supply-pipe communicates, a diaphragm in said chambernormally depressed by said lever, a valve to control the passage of water through said pipe to the damper-operating mechanism,said valve being connected to the said diaphragm and having a spring to open said valve when the latter is released by the lever, a branch pipe leading from the supply-pipe and a valve to open and close said branch pipe, the said valves being simultaneously reversely operated by the said lever, substantially as described.
