Heeds; heel protectors.-A detachable heel pad of rubber, leather, &c. with a wearing face of rubber, hard wood, &c. is fastened to a modified permanent heel by the following means : An horizontal tube 2 is recessed into the boot heel, and is secured by its flange 3 and a staple 5. The Hange3 3 has a recessed surface, and is itself recessed into and screwed to the heel-breast. A bolt pin 9, having a head 7 and a pointed bolt 8 projecting into and across a lateral slot 10 in the heel face, is arranged within the tube 2. A spring &c. surrounding the bolt pin 9 serves to press the bolt into the position shown in Fig. 5. A staple 16 projects upwards from the heel pad, and is inserted into the slot 10. A rounded or bevelled surface 18 on the staple presses the bolt 8 outwards as it passes it, and then permits the bolt to draw the heel into close engagement with the heel face as it regains its position. The slot 10 is covered by a slotted metal plate 11 recessed into and screwed to the heel face. Pins 12 projecting from the heel face register with holes 13 in the heel pad. The front of the heel pad is drawn into close engagement with the heel face by a latch 21 on the head 7, which enters a sleeve 19, the upper inner surface of which is bevelled. A pointed instrument is engaged with holes in the head 7 to free the heel pad, these holes being arranged so as to facilitate removal of soil &c.
