247. Francke, W. J., and Bell, E. W. Jan. 4. Elastic-fluid turbines.-Relates to impact-wheels provided with wheels for returning discharged fluid to the buckets. A casing 1 is provided with steam inlets 2 and exhaust 3. Mounted on the shaft 4 is a wheel carrying the buckets 9, which are integral with the outer extremities of back extensions of spokes 8 extending radially from two disks 5. These disks are clamped together and strengthened by cheek-pieces 7. The buckets 9, Figs. 4 and 5, are inclined to the plane of the wheel, so that the steam discharging from the bottom of one bucket clears the following bucket, as shown at the right-hand portion of Fig. 2. The steam so discharged is received by return buckets 12 carried by plates 11, which are adjustably secured to a rib 10 attached to the casing. The steam passes through the return bucket and is discharged into the following wheel buckets, and from the bottom of these into another return bucket, and so on. The return buckets are inclined to the plane of the wheel, thereby allowing the disposition shown in Fig. 2. The engine may be equipped with single buckets instead of double buckets, and may also be used without return buckets.
