lie it known that I, ADoLPn \YAnLn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'iurbinc-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to turbine-engines, and its object is to utilize the maximum amount of the pressure of units of the steam or other medium employed to actuate the same. This 1 accomplish by the means hereinafter described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side ele 'ation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thercthrough, taken on dotted line 2 2, Fig. '1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a side view of the turbine-disk of the engine. Fig. 4. is a view looking at the reverse side thereof. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the case with the head there' of and the turbine-disk removed looking into the interior thereof. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the interior side of the removable head of the case. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatical view illustrating the method of makingthe turbine-disk.
My invention relates particularly' to the con struction of the case A and its head Band the turbine-disk C, shown in the drawings. The case A preferably corresponds in shape to that of the fan-blower, and it is suitably supported at one end of a frame I), that has suitable bearings for the drive-shaft E, one end of which latter enters said case and has the turbine-disk securely mounted thereon. At a suitable point above the drive-shaft the case has a valve-controlled inlet-opening u. The automatic closure 5 for this opening (1 and its governing devices 0 do not constitute part of the invention which it is desired herein to cover, and further reference thereto is unnecessary.
The idea involved in the construction of the turbine-disk is to pass the steam through buckets in the same, that permit the passage of the steam from one side of the other thereof and then back through another series of buckets, and then once more through the disk, if
desired, in the same direction as originally, said buckets being so constructed that the steam in a comparatively small jet is admitted to a comparatively small closure on one side of the disk, where its initial impelling impact exerts itself and its expansive force can also be utilized to revolve the disk before it escapes therefrom through a comparatively large opening in the bottom of said closure to the other side of the disk. The inner series of buckets F are preferably smaller than those of the nest or intermediate series (i, and the outer series 11 are larger than those of the intermediate. These buckets are made by cutting into one side of the disk with a rotary cutter I, placed at an. angle of about forty-livedegrees to form the aforesaid comparatively larger closure or pocket r of each bucket, and then milling into the opposite side of the disk with an end mill J at an angle of, say, about thirty degrees to form an inlet-port /i, which taps the bottom of the pocket at about its center of length, substantially as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
The pocket of each bucket is arranged in a radial direction, so that the steam entering the same will, as well as when leaving it, exert a force in the same direction. The inletports of the inner concentric series of buckets are located on the side of the disk nearest the steam-inlet 1/ of the case A. The inletports of the next series, G, of buckets is on the side of the disk opposite those of the inner series, and the inlet-ports of the outer series of buckets is on the same side ofthe disk as the innermost series.
Secured concentrically to the inner side of the case A is a circular channeled casting K, the mouth or concave side of which faces and is closed by the case to form an annular steam-chest L, into which the steam-inlet w discharges. The convex side of this steamchest farthest from the wall of the case to which it is attached is flattened and bears against the side of the disk and is provided with an annular series of steam-ports Z A', which are located at the same distance from the axis of the disk as the buckets F and discharge into the same in the direction said disk revolves and at about the same angle to said disk as the ports it of said buckets. The central portion of the head B of the case is concaved, and its inner side is adapted to bear against the side of the disk opposite the steamchest and at a point inside the radius of the buckets F. The steam passing through the buckets F enters an annular steam-chamber M, formed by the said contacting inner surface of head B, and the Z-shaped ring N, which is of a radius slightly greater than the series of buckets G, has one of its flanges projecting outward from the center thereof and secured to the inner surface of the head B and has the flange on its inner edge projecting inward in contact with the disk and provided with an annular series of ports m, which correspond in construction to ports I, are arranged in the same radius as and discharge into and through buckets G of said disk into a third annular steam-chamber O. The inner circular wall of this steam-chamber O is formed by the steam-chest L, and the outer wall thereof is formed by a Z-shaped ring R, whose radius slightly exceeds that of the buckets H. The flange of this ring, secured to the inner surface of the side wall of case A, projects outward, and the flange on the edge thereof nearest the disk projects inward toward the center of and comes in contact with the disk and is provided with an annularly-arranged series of ports r, which correspond in shape to ports m and is and discharge into and through buckets H into the exhaustchamber S, surrounding the outer edge of the disk, from whence the steam is discharged out of the case through the outlet T, substantially as shown in the drawings.
lVhat I claim as new is 1. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
2. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough and inclined from each end in the direction of revolution of said disk, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
3. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough that are smaller at the inlet end than at the outlet end, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.

In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough that are smaller at the inlet end than at the outlet end, and having each end portion converging toward each other in the direction of revolution of said disk, the buckets in each of said series increasing in llenlgth toward the outer circumference of said c is r.
5. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough, that are smaller at the inlet end than at the outlet end and arranged so that the inlets of one series of buckets are on one side of the disk and the inlet ends of another series are on the opposite side thereof, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
6. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough, the inlet end of one series of buckets being on one side of the disk and the inlet ends of another series being on the opposite side thereof, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
7. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough and inclined from each end in the direction of revolution of said disk, the inlet end of one series of buckets being on one side of the disk and the inlet end of another series being on the opposite side thereof, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
8. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough that are smaller at the inlet end than at the outlet end, the inlet end of one series of buckets being on one side of the disk and the outlet end of another series being on the opposite side thereof, the buckets ICO in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
9. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely therethrough that are smaller at the inlet end than at the outlet end, and having each end portion converging toward each other in the direction of revolution of said disk, the inlet end of one series of buckets being on one side of the disk and the inlet-opening of another series being on the opposite side thereof, the buckets in each of said series increasing in length toward the outer circumference of said disk.
10. In a turbine-engine a disk having a concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with a pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk.
11. In a turbine-engine a disk having a concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with a pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the bottom of the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk.
12. In a turbine-engine a disk having a concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with a pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have at the center of length thereof a small opening connecting the bottom of the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk.
13. In a turbine-engine a disk having a concentric series of bucket-s extending transversel y through the disk, which buckets are each provided with an obliquely-cut pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have 'a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk;

In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with a pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk.

In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with a pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk, said buckets being so arranged that those of one series have their pockets on one side of the disk while those of another series have their pockets on the opposite side of the disk.
21. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with an obliquely-cut pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk; said buckets being so arranged that those of one series have their pockets on one side of the disk while those of another series have their pockets on the opposite side of the disk.
22. In a turbine-engine a disk having several concentric series of buckets extending transversely through the disk, which buckets are each provided with an obliquely-cut pocket the length of which is arranged radially to the center of the disk and have a small opening connecting the said pocket with the opposite side of said disk in an oblique plane intersecting the bottom of said pocket; said buckets being so arranged that those of one series have their pockets on one side of the disk while those of another series have their pockets on the opposite side of the disk.
