Abstract

27,244. Praag, D. J. van. Dec. 10. Acetylene.-In a high-pressure acetylene generator suitable for flare lights, water is supplied to the carbide through an inverted U-tube having a non-return valve in one leg, while the other leg enters the generator and is so arranged that, when the gas pressure rises, water is forced back up this leg and the level in the generator forced below the water-admission openings to the carbide. The apparatus shown is adapted to be immersed in a water vessel. Water from this vessel passes through a non-return valve t and to the carbide through an inverted U-tube o, terminating below the lowest perforation j in the carbide-holder h. Gas generated passes through tubes u cooled by water admitted by openings y, and through a chemical purifier c to the burner. When the gas pressure rises, a small quantity of water is forced up the tube o towards the non-return valve, and the level falls below the perforation j. A small amount of water is, however, still supplied to the carbide through an opening n fed from a trough m surrounding the lower part of the carbide container, the trough having its top level with the lowest perforation j. In a modification, for use without immersion in a water vessel, a water casing surrounds the tube condenser and purifier, and water from this casing flows by a non-return valve and inverted U-tube to a central perforated tube in the carbide-container.
