Abstract

26,470. Ogg, J. Nov. 30. Elastic-fluid turbines.-The rotor of a turbine of the Barker's mill type comprises a series of radial tapered nozzles having buckets attached to their outer extremities which discharge the fluid supplied to the nozzles by a hollow slide valve in the hub. A number of tapered nozzles 4 ... 9 are formed in a wheel 1, Figs. 1 and 2, their cross-section increasing in area from the centre to the rim, or vice versa, and suitable buckets 10 ... 15 formed with side walls are secured to the rim at the extremities of the nozzles. Buckets 10, 11, 12 are set for forward motion, and buckets 13, 14, 15 for reverse motion. Fluid is admitted to the hollow shaft 2 by a pipe 52, and its passage to the nozzles is controlled by a slide valve 17 which is made to revolve with the shaft by a feather 35 sliding in a groove 36 in the shaft. Orifices are arranged in the valve so that one, two, or three of them register with a corresponding number of nozzle ports according to the axial position of the valve, the forward or reverse driving nozzles being brought into action according to the direction of the axial movement of the valve. A hand-wheel 26 regulates the position of the valve. In a modification the buckets are formed on, or secured to the side of the wheel near the perimeter. The nozzles may be made separate from the wheel and screwed or otherwise fixed into the boss of the shaft, the buckets being similarly fixed to the other extremities of the nozzles. For reversing, separate rotors may be secured to the same shaft in opposite driving directions. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10, fluid is admitted through the shaft to passages 46 in a' disk 42, whence it passes into inwardly projecting nozzles 48 by way of pipes 44 which connect the disk 42 with a solid disk 43. To one set of nozzles are attached buckets 49 for forward driving, and to the other set buckets 50 for reverse driving.
