Abstract

25,077. Mercier, P. Nov. 12. Screw propellers.-Each blade of an aerial or other propeller is composed of a stem b fitted with one sheet or several step-like superposed sheets 1, 2, 3, 4 arranged to strike the air &c. with a rigid edge and allow the back flow of the fluid over a flexible edge. The blades may be stiffened near the shaft by a wire w or a rod r. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the striking-edge is also made flexible. Fig. 7 shows a method of duplicating the sheets or layers of which the blades are composed. The motion of propellers of this type may be reversed by imparting a half-turn to each blade by the means shown in Fig. 8. The stem b is in this instance carried by a loose sleeve f having a toothed disk o'in gear with a corresponding disk o<1> on the propeller shaft o.
