To aZZ lwhom, t may concern:
Be it known that ll, NICHOLAS SrnzN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of llllinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Boats and Propellers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boats and propellers and has for its object the provision of an improved boat and set of propellers therefor whereby the power supplied to the propellers is utilized with great efficiency.
rlhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter dey scribed and claimed.
rl`he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of a propeller embodying my invention, the boat to which the same is applied being indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, a top plan view corresponding to Fig; l, and Fig. 3, a rear end view corresponding to Fig. 2.
'lhe preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises two hollow water-tight cigar shaped bodies l. and 2 which are rotatably mounted at opposite sides of the boat, a little more than one-half submerged in the water. These bodies carry on their peripheries helical vanes 3 and t respectively, said values being oppositely disposed as shown. Each of the bodies 1 and 2 carries at its rear end a bevel gear 5 meshing with two bevel gears 6 which are loosely mounted on a shaft 7 extending across the rear of the boat. Arranged on shaft 7 between each pair of bevel gears 6 is a clutch member of ordinary construction which is splined to said shaft, said clutch members being connected for operation with the lower end of rods or levers 8 and 9 as indicated.' Shaft 7 is driven by means of a bevel gear l0 meshing with a bevel gear ll mountedlon the lower end of a vertical shaft 12 arranged at the stern/of the boat. Shaft 12 is driven by means of a bevel gear i3 -meshing with a bevel gear lll secured to the end of the ordinary engine shaft l5 which is projected from the stern of the boat for this purpose. By this arrangement it will be observed that the bodies l and 2 may be rotated and stopped or reversed as desired thus giving complete control of the boat. By making the bodies l and 2 hollow and water-tight, their buoyancy is added to that ofthe boat and thus the boat is raised higher in the water which thus adords less resistance. lllhe helical vanes 3 and l will act in substantially the same manner as augers and the water will thusoifer great resistance thereto and consequently effect the application of the power applied with great elhciency.
`While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what li claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is: l
The combination with a boat, of a hollow body rotatably mounted on each side thereof; a shaft extending across the rear end of said boat; means for rotating said shaft; a bevel gear fixed to the rear end of each of said bodies; a pair of bevel gears loosely mounted on said shaft and meshing with opposite sides of each bevel gear on said bodies; a clutch arranged on said shaft between the members of each of said pairs of gears; and a lever for shifting each of said clutches, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NICHOLAS S'lPlRN.
