Abstract
20,935. Lanston Monotype Corporation, [Lanston Monotype Machine Co.]. Sept. 20. Monotype and like machines.-Relates to machines such as that described in Specification No. 18,638, A.D. 1899, for making record strips or controllers for typecasting, composing, and like machines, and more particularly to means for arranging the keys in any desired manner, irrespective of the arrangement of the punches. The punches are in two groups, the members of one of which determine the width of the characters and are connected to the linemeasuring mechanism. The punch - bars 9 are actuated by a verticallysliding plate 14 carried by pistons working in cylinders 20 which form a motor. Lugs 27 on the p u n c h - bars occupy the upper parts of two slots 15, 16 in the plate 14 corresponding to the two groups of punches. Interponents 28, 29, which are adapted to enter the slots beneath the lugs 27, serve to connect the punch-bars with the actuating- plate 14. Key-levers 30 pivoted on rods 31 engage lugs 39 on bars 34, which at their lower ends are connected to pivoted arms 36. The bars 34 are formed in two parts which are connected by a rib and seat 38. A lug 53 on each bar 34 engages one of a pair of rods 50 carried by arms on a shaft 51. The second rod 50 of each pair rests between lugs on a bar 41 which is connected by a lever 43, a link 44, and a lever 45 with a rod 46 carrying one of the interponents 28. The interponents 29 are actuated by bars 58 which are connected by lugs 57, 55 and rocking bars 56 with bars 54 pivotally connected to the arms 36. Each key-lever thus operates one of each of the interponents 28, 29 corresponding to one punch of each group. The rise of the plate 14 prevents the advance of all the interponents not actuated by the key-lever. Lugs 67 on the bars 54 act through a rocking bar 68 on a lug on a bar 71, which actuates the valves of the compressed-air motor. Spring-tensioned bars 64, 62 return the bars 34, 58 respectively to normal position. A lever 10 actuated by the plate 14 operates the escapement of the line measuring mechanism; and levers 12 connected-to one group of punch-bars operate the stops 5 of the unitsrack. A projection -on the plate 14 actuates the paper-feed.
