Strip-perforating machines; key-boards.-Relates to machines such as that described in Specification 18,638/99, for producing record-strips for controlling automatic composing-machines such as that described in Specification 8633/99, in which a diecase moves in two directions at right-angles over the casting or impression point. Each punch or signal-producing device is actuated by two or more punch-bars or actuating-members, and thus serves to control two or more of the gauges, which arrest the die-case in one of its two directions of motion. By this means, the number of punches is reduced by one-half, and the width of the record-strip is diminished. One or more pilot or selecting punches are provided and are operated automatically by one of the two or more punch-bars which actuate each punch. The perforations produced by the pilot punches control a shift-mechanism on the composing- machine, whereby the action of a punch is transferred from one gauge to another. The punch-bars B are, as heretofore, in two groups, which correspond to rows and columns in the diecase respectively, and each group is subdivided into two sub-groups. The punches B<1> are connected by straight interponents B<2> with the punchbars of the two inner sub-groups, and by bent interponents B<3> with the bars of the two outer sub-groups. Each punch can thus be operated either by a punch-bar of one of the inner sub-groups or by a punch-bar of the adjacent outer sub-group. The bars of the inner sub-groups operate one of two pilot punches hy means of bars H<3>, which engage shoulders on the punch-bars, levers H<7>, links H<4>, and levers H<5>. The punch-bars are returned to normal position by a bar E, and the interponents by a spring- controlled lever J. Specification 17,199/08 is also referred to.
