QORPOBATION, or' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- Applioatiqn :llled February 4, 19245. Serial Nol-690,498.
To all whom z't may' concern: t. v
Be it known that YUICIII OI;AMT0, a subject ofthe Emperor'off'dapan, residing at Tokyo, Japan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perforators, of which the following is a s eciication.
The present invention re ates to improvements in keyboard perforators.
More particularly, the-'invention relates to-a perforator for telegraphic and like purposes in which code combinations are perforated in tape which is then used -to control A perforator of this character is disclosed in U. S. Patent .No 1,085,985 issued to Edward E;' Kleinschmidt," February 13, 1914, yand the preferred embodiment hereinafter disclosed will be set forth as a plied to the perforator disclosed in the sai patent, so much' only of the old structure being shown as will be necessary for an understanding of the present improvement to be had.
An obect of the invention is to increase the num er of-combinations which may be first descri perforated on the mechanism withoutY in-r creasing the number of keys on the keyboard.
Other objects of the invention are such as will appear in the yfollowing detailed disclosure of the preferred embodiment of The drawing is a fra ental side elevation, more` or less in iagram and with parts omitted to clearly set forth improvement and its relation to the old structure'.
Referring to the drawin thesame reference characters are lused or similar parts' as has been applied thereto in the above mentioned patent and the old parts will be ed. 1 represents the key bars which are fulcrumed about bar 2, it being understood that a bank of keysl are used. Arranged longitudinallyv of and beneath,
i each key bar'is a notched bar 3v fulcrumed on transverse bar 4,- and retained in normal upward position by a spring 5 individual to eachmtched bar 3, secured upon each key bar 1 are guide plates -6 between whichbars 3 rest to prevent sidewise movement thereof. Each'bar 3 has a/short projecting section of its upper edge to pass between the guide plates as shown. A transversely extendin stop 7 limits the downward movement of ars 3 'when depressed by `the key l bar, and a stop 7 limits the upward movement of the key bars. J or selector bars 8' are arranged in the manner shown in Patent No.v 1,085,985 and control the punch-selectors and mechanisms in the manner set forth in said patent, so that depression of any bar' 8 causes a corresponding punch to be o erated.
. e apparatus so far described is'oldand f mannerfto shift bars 3 bodily with relation to bars 8 and key bars 1. Secured to eX-` stension 10 of the fulcrum block is al spring 11 which holds the fulcrum 4 together with bars 3 in rearward position or to the right in the drawing." Rigidly secured to the fulcrum block is a shift key bar 12 which when depresse/d will throw the fulcrum 4 to ether with bars 3 forward. In the rearwar position of key bars 3 a oup of projections 13 thereof will be direct y over bars 8 and pro-- jections 14 will be between bars 8 so that cwhen the Jkeys are depressed pro'ections 13 only will set combinations of punc es. With shift-bar 12 raised, only pro]ections 14 will set punches when a key is depressed.. It will ofcourse be understood that the arrangements and numbers of projections 13 are varied on each key bar in a manner to setup the various desired combinations.
In order to prevent" thefinterference of bars 8 with thfeJ shifting movements of the bars 3 stop plates 15 are provided which limit' the upward movement of bars 8 and prevent engagement of teeth 13 vand 14 therewith when keys 1 are in normal upper position.-
By. utilizing the described arrangement it will be seen that each key will perforate`2 or more characters depending on the number of shift positions provided. Such perforators are particularly adapted for perforation lof code arrangements. for Japanese and like ,alpabets' where a relatively great num- 'n ber of different characters must be perforated.
Having described a preferred, embodiment of the invention what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent and claimed as new 1s:
1. A perforator comprising a plurality of punch controlling selectors,l a plurality of `members arranged to control such punch selectors in varying combinations, and means for shifting said members with relation to said punch selectors in a` manner to change the combinations controlled by said l members.
prises apivoted fulcrum for said members.
4. A tape perforator comprising a plurality of key levers; a plurality of code combination bars each of which carries two or more code combinations and is associated With one of said key levers; and means for displacing said bars according to the code combination carried thereby which it isdesired to perforate.
5. The combination as set forth in claim 4 in which said code combination bars are fulcrumed on a common member to ether with means for displacing said mem er.
6. The combination as set forth in claim 4 in which the code combination bars are pivoted on a pivoted .fulcrum block, together with means for shifting said fulcrum block about its' pivot.
Signedl atlLong Island City, New-York,
I,this 31st day of January, 1924.
