Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BERTRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Matrix-Delivery Mechanism for Monoline Composing-Machines, of which the following is a speci cation.
The resent invention relates to improvements in composing machines and particularly of the monoline type wherein the matrices are each provided with a plurality of characters and the matrices may be selected from the magazine and brought to the assembling point under the control of a keyboard, and it has for its object primarily to provide improved delivery mechanism for machines of this class whereby a plurality of fonts of matrices may be combined in the machine and the matrices of any one of a plurality of fonts may be brought into operative relation with the keyboard so that the matrices of any selected font may be quickly and easily brought into use from a single keyboard, the capacity of the machine being thereby increased and the delay and other objections incident to the interchanging of magazines or fonts as heretofore practiced, are avoided.
A further object of the invention is to provide font selecting means for machines of this type which is very simple in its construction and which is interposed between the keyboard and the detent levers the selecting means being capable of adjustment with facility by the operator.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a composing machine of the monoline type, parts being broken away so as to illustrate the application of the present invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the delivery mechanism showing the selecting device of the present invention applied thereto; Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the selecting device however being shown in a different position whereby a second series of matrix bars may be brought into use; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the selecting device showing its relation to two of the detent levers.
Similar parts are designated by the same reference characters in the several views.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown the present invention as applied to the well known monoline composing machine wherein each matrix bar bears a plurality of characters and the invention is particularly applicable to machines of this type. I have also shown in the drawing, a selecting and delivery mechanism for machines of this type whereby the matrices of either of two fonts may be brought into operative relation with a single keyboard. The invention, however, is capable of use in connection with a machine which accommodates two or more fonts of matrices, delivery mechanism for two fonts of matrices being shown in the drawing as an example. In the present instance, I have shown a portion of a keyboard which embodies a suitable number of key levers 1 which are connected to appropriate draw-bars 2 which are in turn connected through bail rods to the respective links 3. These links are slidable With respect to a suitable guide 3 and their rear ends are capable of a limited vertical movement and extend beneath a row of detent levers 4:. According to the present embodiment of my invention, there is one set of detent levers for the matrices of each font, although a single keyboard is used for operating the different sets of detent levers and, according to the present invention, I inter-pose a selecting device between the keyboard and the detent levers whereby the detent levers may control the delivery of matrices from the selected font. The selecting means shown in the present instance consists of a guide or roller 5 which is preferably provided with peripheral grooves 6 in which grooves rest the rear portions of the keyboard links 3, the roller guide being mounted upon a shaft which in turn is supported at its ends by arms 7 and these arms are pivoted at 8 to suitable bearings 9 which bearings may be fixed to appropriate parts of the machine frame. The engagement of the key links, 3 in the grooves of the roller guide prevents lateral displacement of these links or, in other words, retains them in correct operative relation. with the respective detent levers. The arms of the roller guide are pivoted to the bearing blocks at one side of the center of the guide and a turning movement of the supporting arms about the pivot 8 as a center will alter the vertical posit-ion of the rear portions of the links 3 and in order to facilitate the adjustment of the roller guide, one of the arms 7 in the present instance is shown as prolonged to form a lever 10 and a rod 11 is pivoted or otherwise attached to this lever and extends forwardly into a point within convenient reach of the operator. The vertical position occupied by the roller guide will determine which font of matrices is to be delivered and it is preferable to provide suitable means for retaining the guide in its different adjusted positions. In the present instance, I have shown the rod 11 as provided with a plurality of projections 12 which correspond in number to the number of fonts of matrices that the machine is adapted to use, and a stop 13 is provided which may cooperate with one of these projections and thus retain the selecting device in the de sired position. 1
Each link 8 carries a tripping device 141 which is preferably located between the rear side of the detents and the roller guide, and this tripping device is of a width that renders it capable of spanning or engaging a number of detent levers corresponding to the number of fonts which the machine accommodates. In the present instance, two sets of detent levers are shown whereby the machine may be adapted for two fonts of matrices and hence the tripping device on each link is of such a width as to span two detent levers. The relation of the tripping device to the detent levers is such, however, that a given position of the tripping device it is" capable of releasing only one of the detent levers when actuated. This result is accomplished in the present instance by providing the detent levers with notches 15, the notch in one detent lever being arranged in stepped or offset relation to the notch in the adjacent detent lever. Consequently, when the links 3 are set at a given height by the roller guide and such links are moved forwardly, the tripping device will engage the rear edge of one detent lever and thus move it into releasing position while the notch in the adjacent detent lever will be in line with the tripping device and for this reason the adjacent detent lever will not be released. Obviously, by winding the tripping device and providing an additional set of detent levers having appropriately located notches, the delivery mechanism may be readily adapted to accommodate three or more fonts of matrices.
The detent levers in the present instance are shown in connection with the usual means embodied in the monoline type of composing machmes for effect ng the delivery of the matrices, a set of detents 16-being provided which correspond in number to the number-of detent levers and these detents co: operate with the locking projections upon the magazine pawls or gates 17, the latter being acted upon by springs 18 which serve to retract them and thus permit the delivery of the appropriate matrices when such pawls or gates are released from the keyboard.
The operation of a font selecting and matrix delivery mechanism constructed in accordance with the present embodiment of my invention may be briefly described as follows: Assuming that the rod 11 occupies its rear position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, pressure upon the key lever 1 will draw the bar 2 and the appropriate link 3 forward. At this time the roller guide 5 occupies its lower position and hence the tripping device 14 will be in line with the rear edge of one detent lever and in a position to enter a notch in the adjacent detent lever, a forward movement of the link 3 thereby causing one of the detent levers to be actuated and permitting the other detent lever to remain stationary or in locked position. The appropriate detent 16 will be thereby released, permitting an opening or delivery movement of the respective magazine pawl orgate 17, the released parts being shown as shaded in Fig. 2. IVhile the selecting device is so set, the matrices from one font may be brought into use while the matrices in the other font are not affected by operation of the keyboard. lVhen it is desirable, however, to bring into use a second font of matrices, the adjusting rod 11 may be pulled forward, thereby placing the roller guide in the position shown in Fig. at. The elevation of the roller guide alters the relation of the tripping device with respect to the detent levers, it being in arposition to engage the rear edge of a different detent lever at this time and is in a position to enter the notch in the other detent lever and, in this manner, matrices from a different font may be brought into use as desired.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a monoline composing machine, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls for controlling the delivery of matrices of different fonts, series of devices for controlling the movements of said pawls, those of one series having operating portions located differently with respect to those of another series, a'keyboard, and means for altering the relation between the keyboard and the operating portions of the pawl con trolling devices whereby matrices of one of a plurality of fonts may be delivered.
2. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls, series of devices arranged.
in a row for controlling the movements of said pawls, the pawl controlling devices of one series having notches arranged differently with respect to those of another series, a keyboard, and means forming an operative connection between the keyboard and the pawl controlling devices, said means being adjust-able relatively to said notched portions of the pawl controlling devices whereby either one of said pawls may be released without releasing the other.
3. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls for controlling the delivery of matrices of different fonts, series of devices arranged in a single row, the pawl controlling devices of one series having portions located differently with respect to those of another series for controlling the movements of said pawls, a keyboard having links for actuating the pawl controlling devices, and means for altering the relation between said links and the operating portions of the pawl controlling devices whereby only one of said pawls may be released by each link.
4. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls for controlling the delivery of matrices of different fonts, a row of detent levers for controlling the movements of said pawls, certain of said levers in said row having operating portions located differently with respect to others, a keyboard having links, and tripping devices operative by said links, each tripping device being common to a plurality of detent levers and capable of adjustment relatively to the operating portions of said levers whereby it may actuate any one of a plurality of detent levers.
In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of series of gates for controlling the delivery of matrices of different fonts, detents for controlling the movements of said gates, detent levers arranged in a row andcooperative with said detents, certain of the detent levers in said row having differently located operating portions and actuating means for the detent levers capable of adjustment rela tively to said operating portions of the detent levers whereby said means may operate such levers as will permit the delivery of matrices of one of a plurality of fonts.
6. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls, detent levers for controlling the movements of said pawls, certain of said levers having notches arranged in offset relation, and a keyboard having tripping means capable of adjustment relatively to said notches whereby either one of said detent levers may be actuated from the keyboard. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls, detent levers for controlling the movements of said pawls, certain of said levers having notches arranged in offset relation, a keyboard, tripping devices each common to a plurality of detent levers and operative by the keyboard, and means for altering the relation between said tripping devices and the notched portions of the detent levers whereby any one of said levers may be actuated independently of another.
8. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls, devices for controlling the movements thereof and provided with notches arranged in ofi'set relation, a keyboard including links provided with tripping devices, each tripping device being common to a plurality of pawl controlling devices, and selecting means capable of altering the )osition of said links whereby the tripping evices may actuate certain of the pawl controlling devices independent-1y of others.
9. In a composing machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of magazine pawls for controlling the delivery of matrices of different fonts, a row of devices for controlling the movements of said pawls, certain ofthe controlling devices in said row having operating portions located differently with respect to others in the row, a keyboard including reciprocatory links, each link carrying a tripping device common to a plurality of pawl controlling devices, and an adjustable guide cooperative with said links and capable of altering the relation of the tripping devices with respect to the operating portions of the pawl controlling devices whereby one series of pawls may be actuated independently of another series.
