FONT-SELECTING MECHANISM FOR MONOLINE COMPOSING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed July 6, 1909. Serial No. 506,087.
. manipulation of the keyboard, and it has for its object to provide means whereby a plurality of fonts of matrices may be combined in the same machine and matrices from any one selecting font may be quickly and easil brought into use from the same keyboar the capacity of the machine being thereby materially increased and the rinted matter may be set up in type of itferent styles without requiring the use of one or more separate machines or the interchanging of matrices.
More specifically, the invention provides simple and efficient 'font selecting devices which are interposed between the detent levers and the detents wherebymatrices from any one of a plurality of fonts may be readily brought into use from the same keyboard.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrngements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the detents which control the matrix delivery gates, the detent levers and the font selecting devices; Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective Views showing the font controlling device in two diflerent positions whereby matrices from two different fonts may be brought into use; TFi
4 is a perspective view showing a font controllmg device modified so as to accommodate three different fonts of matrices which may all becontained in the same machine, and Fig. 5 represents a vertical section I through the rear portions of the detents and the matrix delivery gates.
Similar parts are designated by the same reference characters in the several views.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown certain embodiments of the invention and these embodiments are especially applicable to the well known monoline type of composing and casting machines such as disclosed in Letters Patent, No. 605,141 granted June 7, 1898. It will be understood, however, that the specific constructions shown and to be hereinafter described are given as examples of the invention and the invention is not limited in these respects, as certain modifications and changes may be made therein in order that the invention may be applied to the best advantage in each particular case.
In the present instance, 1 designates the usual reclprocatory matrix delivery gate and, according to the present embodiment of the invention, there will be seven gates for each font of matrices. In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 13 inclusive, provision is made for the use of two fonts of matrices which may be combined in the same machine and controlled by the same keyboard. There will consequently be fourteen matrix delivery gates, and these matrix delivery gates are controlled in their delivery movements by detents 2 which are preferably individual to the various gates; in other words, fourteen detents are shown for controllin the delivery movements of the correspon ing number of gates. These detents are preferably arranged in a row and in alinement, they being preferably pivoted upon a common pivot pin 3 which pin is supported by a suitable bracket 4, and the detents are provided with individual downwardly projecting fingers 5 through the medium of which the detents are operated to release their respective gates.
According to the present invention, the font controlling and selecting devices are interposed between the detents and the detent levers which will be hereinafter described and, in the present instance, these selecting devices consist of a series of pawls 6 which are preferably arranged in a row and pivoted upon a common pintle 7, this pintle in turn being mounted in a carrier 8 which in turn is shiftable on a support 9. This carrier in the instance shown is shiftable in a direction substantially longitudinally of the detents, and any suitable means may be provided for guiding the carrier in its movement. In the present instance, the carrier rests upon the support 9 and pins 10 on the support rest in slots 11 formed in the carrier.
According to the present embodiment of the invention,I provide a single series of detent levers 12 which preferably correspond in number to the number of delivery gates and detents for one font of matrices, and the upper ends of these detent levers are preferably arranged directly beneath or in register with the detents forming one series, a pin or projection 13 extending laterally from one side of each detent lever; These detent levers are preferably arranged in a row and pivoted on a common axis 14, the latter being mounted in a support 15 which support may be conveniently attached to the support 9. The detent levers may be as usual connected to the keyboard mechanism by links 16, these links in turn being con nected through the rods 17 to the reciprocatory draw bars 18, the draw bars being connected to the key levers.
Any suitable means may be provided for shifting the font selecting and detent controlling devices. In the present instance, I have shown for example a lever 19 the end of which may be located within convenient reach of the operator, and this lever is pivoted or fulcrumed at 20 to the support 9, the end of the lever being forked as at 21 and is arranged to coeperate with a pin or projection 22 formed on a lug 23, this lug being formed on or attached to the shiftable carrier.
The font selecting and detent controlling pawls 6 in that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1-3 inclusive, are capable of operating a series of detents for one or another of two fonts of matrices, each pawl in the presentinstance being provided with a laterally offset detent-engaging portion 6 which rests above the respective detent lever and beneath the depending finger 5 of a detent of one series while a clearance space is formed beside this portion 6 which will permit a lifting movement of the pawl to trip the detent of one series and avoiding tripping the next detent of a second series. When the carrier 8 is shifted into-a forward position, this portion 6 is in operative position. When, however, the carrier 8 is shifted rearwardly or into asecond position, the detent tripping portion 6 is pushed clear of the depending finger 5 of one detent and the body portion of the pawl is carried into a position to rest upon the laterally extending pin or projection 13 of the detent lever while its upper surface is adapted to rest beneath the depending finger 5 of the detent of a second series, as shown in Fig. 3. By operating thedetent lever while the pawl 6 is in this second position, obviously, the detent of the second series will be tripped while that of the first series will remain in locked position.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a font selecting device which is capable of operating the gate controlling detents of any one of three series, one series of detents being provided for each font of matrices. In this construction, the pawl 6 is provided with a body portion which serves to trip a detent of one series, and two laterally stepped or offset tripping portions 7 and 7 b which are arranged in diagonal relation. The carrier for the pawls in this latter construction will be capable of occupying three different positions and while occupyingany one of these three different positions, the gate controlling detent for the desired font will be in position to be tripped while the two detents of the remaining two series will be unaffected by a lifting of the pawl and will, therefore, re main locked.
The font selecting devices which in the present instance are interposed between the gate controlling detents and the detent levers serve in effect as filling-in pieces and by mounting these selecting devices whereby they maybe adjusted in a direction longitudinally with respect to the detents, it is possible to use three or more fonts in the same machine owing to the clearance or greater range of movement available with respect to the gate controlling detents.
I claim as my invention:
