Abstract

12,815. Hall, F. A. L. March 14, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Monotype machines.-Relates to means for casting low quads by means of a divided mould blade of which the upper section is advanced independently of the lower section by the descent of the die-case. The two parts 2, 3 of the blade 1 are preferably of the form shown in Fig. 5, and are normally connected together by a pair of hooks 30 pivoted to the upper part of the blade and engaging, under the influence of a spring 31, the pin 6 which connects the blade to the operating-rod. The hooks 30 are tripped to release the upper part of the blade by an arm on a rock-shaft 9. The upper part of the blade is advanced by a lever one end of which engages a notch 21 in the blade, the other being engaged by a spring buffer 13, Fig. 1, carried by an arm 12 on the shaft 9. The shaft 9 is rocked by the depression of either of two rods 26 which are carried by pairs of parallel links 27, one link of each pair being fixed to the shaft 9. The rods 36 are depressed by any one of three projections 24 on the die-case which correspond to em quads, en quads, and justifying-spaces respectively. Fig. 7 shows a mould-blade for use with the old type of Lanston monotype machine in which the upper part of the blade has a recess to receive a block 40 fitted with a wearing-shoe 38 which can be adjusted by means of a screw 39.
