INDAHL, citizens of the United States. residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania..y have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Record-Strip Composing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description of th@ same.l reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures and lette-rs of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to keyboard perforating machines of the class commonly employed for producing the successive signals (each composed of one or more perforations and distinguished by number and relative location) which go to make up the record strips or controllers for type casting and other machines, and it has for its principal object to provide means whereby the justification fraction pertaining to 'any given line of composition may be applied to any one or more of the individual types included in said line in addition to or in substitution for the normal justifying space types.
One of the best known machines of the class referred to is illustrated and described in Patent. No. 944405, dated December 28, 1909, wherein the various signals employed are each represented b`y a separate key, the latter controlling, through permutation devices, those members of a series of punches which by their location coincide With the components of the signal pertaining to the depressed key, While at the same time the measure or value of the produced signals pertaining to the same line are registered by a line measuring mechanism, to aid the operator in ascertaining the justification fraction or the appropriate signal therefor for completing the line.

ow, the object of the present invention is to enable the justication fraction for a line to be applied to any one or more of the normally non-justifiable types indicatedv therein in the record strip, and this is accomplished by providing controllable means for coupling up all or any of the dimension indicating punches With the punch producing the transfer component of the space signa and at the same time cutting out the connection between the transfer punch and the line measuring mechanism, so that the value of the indicated and otherwise nonjustifiable type Will be registered thereon instead of the value of the justifying space, to the end that the transfer component of the justification space signal may be added to the signal of the otherwise non-justifiable type signal and the normal value of said type signal be registered on the line measuring mechanism.
The addition of the transfer component to the otherwise non-justifiable type signal has the edect, in the casting machine, of transferring the produced adjustment of the mold from the normal to the normal plus justifying adjusting device, and as this diminishes the value of the indicated type two units, the deficiency is made up and applied through the medium of the justification signal, the value of the latter being increased tWo units of the set which amount is thus added to each of the normally nonjustifiable type signals to which the transfer component has been applied, in other Words, the shortageI in the indicated measuire resulting from the operation of the transfer mechanism is made good by a corresponding increase in the value of .the justification signals'.

The invention 1s illustrated in its application to the keyboard composing or perforating machine of Patent No. 944,405 hereinbefore referred to, and it will 'suffice' for purposes of identification to designate some of the principal elements with which the improvements are more directly related such as the keys 1; the series of punches Q; the series of transmitting members 3 through one or more of which the movement of each key is communicated to one or more valve bars (not shown), each of the latter controlling the action of a punch; the line measuring and justification indicating mechanism 4; the paper feed 5; the series of levers 6 through which the dimensioning punches of series Q operate upon the admeasuring devices of the line measuring mechanism; the stopbars 7 and the lever 8 through Which the punch of the transfer component of the space signal actuatcs the four unit stop bar of the admeasuriug mechanism.
By reference to the prior patent it will lie found that each key l exercises control over one or more of the punches 2 in the production of the signal appropriated thereto, whether it be a type, space, justification or other signal and that in so controlling the punches it oscillates one or more of the transmitting members 3, of the lat-ter coupled with the dimensioning punches, and that the punch for the transfer component of the space signal, represented by transmitting member 3, is coupled through lever 8 With the first or four unit member of the stop bars 7. y

With these ends in view said lever 8 is provided with a removable fulcrum represented by a piston or bolt 18 guided to move longitudinally to a cylinder 19 in the frame above lever 8 and provided With a bearing portion 2O adapted to contact withthe upper surfaceof said lever and form thefulcrum therefor when the bolt isin one extreme position under the inu- Eence of a spring 21 the latter located within the bolt or piston between its head and a ,guiding pin 22 passed through an elongated slot 23 in said piston. When pressure is admitted to cylinder 19 piston 18 will be moved inl opposition to spring 21, thereby withdrawing bearing 20 and permitting l,lever 8- to oscillate upon its connection with .the stop bar without however displacing the latter, the opening in said lever for the retaining pin v24 supplying the fulcrum for the other stop bar levers 25.heing enlarged ltopermit this action.
Coperative action of the transfer punch, and register operating dev1ces is obtained thro-ugh a control valve 30governing the pressure in cylinders 16 and 19. Cylinders 16 and 19 are in open communication through a duct 3l from which a branch leads to one end of a chamber 32 in which valve 30 is located. The valve contains a port 33 adapted to register with a.port 34 communicating with duct 31, and aY passage 3G connecting -port 33 with -the interior of valve chamber 32. Valve 30 is provided with actuating means, such as a handle 37 for shifting it to cut olf or admit pressure to cylindersI 1G, 19, and when cutting oftl to open an exhaust port 28 so that the pistons .may he returned to normal positions by their respective retracting springs or otherwise.
In operation when it is desired to apply justification to one or more type signals, valve 30 is turned to admit pressure to cylinders 16, 19, whereupon. interponent 10 is advanced to operative position and fulcrum 18 simultaneously withdraws from operativeI position with the result that the produced t-ype signal or signals will contain the space transfer component while the truc value ot the type signal will be registered by the line measuring mechanism; and when it is desired to resume normal conditions valve 30 is turned to cut off pressure in the cylinders and interponent 10 is withdrawn from active position while bearing 2O resumes its'activc station.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
l. n a record strip composing machine equipped with a series of punches including a transfer and a plurality of dimensioning members, a series of keys controlling said punches singly, and a line measuring mechanism the admeasuring members whereof are coupled for action with said dimensioning and transfer members, and in combination therewith, controllable means for rendering inoperative the admeasuring member of the transfer punch and for coupling the latter With the dimensioning punches to act in conjunction therewith.
2. 1n. a record strip composing machine equipped with a series of punches including a transfer and a plurality of dimension indicating members, a series of keys controlling said punches, and a line measuring mechanism provided with admeasuring means controlled by said transfer and dimension indicating members, and in combination therewith, controllable means for simultaneously 4rendering inoperative the connection between said transfer member and the line measuring mechanism and coupling up for action said transfer and dimensioning members. In a record strip composing machine, the combination of the following elements, to-wit: a series of key-controlled punches including a transfer member, a line measuring mechanism whose admeasuring members are coupled to respond to the several keys including` that of the transfer member, to register the individual values thereof; and controllable means for cutting out the ad measuring member of said transfer member.
4. ln a record strip composing machine, the combination of the following elements, tio-wit: a series of type'and space indicating keys; a series of punches responding singly or in multiple to said keys including a transfer indicating punch; a line measuring mechanism providedI with admeasuring members coupled with and responding to said keys to register the values of the signals represented thereby; and controllable means for temporarily suspending the action of the admeasuring member for the transfer punch and for coupling the latter 'with the type keys so that the signal produced by any type key will include the transfer component and the value of the type indicated by said key will be registered.
ln a record strip composing machine such as described provided with a series of punches including a transfer punch, and type and space indicating keys controlling said punches singly or in multiple through a series of transmitters, to produce distinctive signals, and in combination therewith, controllable means for temporarily coupling the transmitter for the transfer punch with the other transmitters so that the type keys when operated will add a transfer component to the produced type signal.
6. ln a record strip composing machine such as described and in combination with the transmitters of the transfer and dimensioning punches thereof, a movable interponent adapted to temporarily couple the transmitters of the dimensioning punches with that of the transfer punch in a manner to permit individual action thereon.
7. ln a record strip composing machine such as described and in combination with the transfer and dimensioning punches, and
the actuating levers through which said 'incassa punches are coupled with the admeasuring members of the line measuring mechanism thereof, controllable means for temporarily rendering inoperative the actuating lever coupled with the transfer punch so that the latter may cooperate in the production of a type signal containing a transfer component without at the same time affecting the line measuring mechanism.
8. ln a record strip composing machine such as described provided with a series of key-controlled punches including a transfery punch and a plurality of dimensioning punches, and a line measuring mechanism provided with admeasuring devices individually controlled by said transfer and dimensioning punches, and in combination therewith, an interponent adapted to couple the individual dimensioning punches with the transfer punch and uncoupling means for the admeasuring member of said transfer punch, whereby a transfer component may be added to any type signal and the value of the latter registered by the line measuring mechanism.

A record strip composing machine equipped with a series of key controlled punches including a transfer punch and a plurality ofdimensioning punches, and a line measuring mechanism whose admeasuring devices are coupled with said punches to register the value of each, and in combination therewith, a motor-actuated means for coupling the transfer punch with any dimensioning punch so as to cause it to operate in conjunction therewith, and a motorcontrolled means for rendering the transfer punch inoperative upon the line measuring mechanism.

A record strip composing machine equipped with a series of key-controlled punches including a transfer punch and a plurality of dimensioning punches, and a line measuring mechanism whose admeasur ing members are separably and individually controlled by said transfer and dimensioning punches, and in combination therewith, a motor-controlled means for cutting out or suspending' the action of the admeasuring member responding to the transfer punch, a motor-controlled means for coupling the transfer punch with each dimensioning punch to cause them to operate together, and means for simultaneously energizing the motors of said cutting out and coupling means.

In a record strip composing machine equipped with a seriesof punches including a transfer punch and a plurality of dimensioning punches, a series of keys and transmitters for actuating said punches singly or in multiple, and a line measuring mechanism separately controlled by said transfer and dimensioning punches, and in combination therewith, means for coupling` the transfer and dimensioning punches, a motor for said coupling means, means for unooupling the transfer punch from the line measuring mechanism, a motor for said uncoupling 5 means, and a control device common to the two motors.
12. In a record strip composing machine such as described the combination With the lever connectingr the transfer punch and 10 line measuring mechanism, of a movable fulorum for said lever coupled With a piston and spring for shifting said fulcrum to alternately support and release said lever.
13. In a record strip composing machine such as described and in combination With 15 With a plurality of the remaining members, 20
