Abstract

18,415. Humphrey, A. H. May 15, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Incandescent gas lamps.-In an inverted lamp, the burner ring 5, Fig. 1, and the valved burner tubes 7 are cooled by air which enters through holes 25 in the globe band and passes for the most part through the holes 14<1> and up between the chimney 9 and the casing 13 which acts as a draught-inducer. The globe band also admits air for combustion through holes 26, the two currents being separated by the flange 24. The chimney flanges support the casing 13 and protect the burners, and the mantles are suspended through holes in the plate 32. Gas is led from the supply pipe into the trap chamber 40 (shown also in Figs. 9 and 10 which are cross-sections of the casing 6, Fig. 1), whence any sediment or moisture is removable through the plugged opening 49. When the lamp is not burning, the pilot-jet 55 is fed through the passage 52 leading from the trap chamber to the pilot chamber 50. When the tap is turned, the movement being limited by the pin 45, the hollow plug 43 revolves, and while gas is being admitted in the valve chamber 41 and the burner ring by the registering of the port 46 with the passage 42, the pilot-jet is " flashed " by the passage of the port 47 across the pilot chamber inlet 51. Both passages 51, 52 are preferably adjustable by the screws 54, 53. Fig. 8 shows an alternative arrangement for admitting air between the chimney and casing ; Fig. 11 is a section of one of the burner-tube valves 56.
