Specification of Letters Patent.
, I Patented July 2S, 1908.
Be it known that we, CLARENCE B. WHITE, a-citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, New Jersey, and THOMAS WHITE, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the borough of Brookl n, in' the city of New York, State ofNew' ork, have invented certain new and useful Iin rovements in Gas-Burners, of which the fol owing is a speciiication. l
The present invention relates to a lam of fthe socalled Wel'sbach type in whic a mantle is brought to la high stateof incandesj 'cence by the heat of a B'unsen flame;
a lamprof that typel in' which' the Bunsen tlesupported below thel outlet end of the burner tube instead of'above as has been the general practice heretofore.
'Lhe invention will b e` understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fi ure 1 is a .vertical section with the gassupp Zonta section on the plane of the ine 2 -2 of Similar reference numerals indicate'similar parts in the several views. l, Referring to the drawings,l the numeral 1 designates an outer inclosing' metallic cylin.
, drical casing-having at itsl u per 'and' lower ends lava or othen. suitable" eat Vinsulatin blocks 2 and ,3 respectively. Each of sai blocks isprovided 'with a central opening, as shown, and surrounding the opening in the block 2 on its upper side is a plate 4 haviirga ,threaded ilange sea-tedin the block opening and Ito Whichissecured a nipple '5, the latter adapted to -be secured 'to a gassuppl On their inner sidesf-.theblo'cks 2,-. an y '.formed with'g'roovessurrounding the central openings which-grooves lconstitute `seats t'o Pire-V receive ajburnei' tribe 7 the up 'er end of whichl -terminates'iminediately l elowfthe 'of the nipple 5. The tube 7 is provided near its u per end with an. opening 8. through. which the necessary air' is'supplied to the 'gas for the"v lsiurpose of producing a heating flame.'
` cated in the opening .in the' lower block '3 and' projectin udownwardly therefrom isa' burner tip 9., t 4'e whole constituting a burner Bunsen type. p mantle 10 is secured by means of suit,-
materially in ysecuring proper combustion o tube in elevation,l and Fig. 2 a hori-y 8' are.
An incanaiescing able base-11 to the outer side of 'the lowerL end of the cylindrical casing 1.
The casing 1 is provided. with any convenient number of openings 12 in which are se-l l cured laterally projecting open ended filles 13.
U on these iiues is supported 'a shield 14 W iich may be -given any desired ornamentation and to which is secured by means of set screws 15 a glass globe 16 to'inclose the mantle' 10.
In o eration the'gas' will pass downwardly throng the nipple 5 and escaping into the tube 7 will be mixed with tlie necessary proportion of air passing in through the iues 13 The object 'of the invention is' to construct y 'escape throu h the interstices of the mantle and will Arise etween the casing 41 and shield 14 thus heating the incoming air in ilues 13 and the column of airin casing 1, assistin 1 the as. t,
T e casing 1 being ciosed to the products 'of combustion the air 'confined their 'i' wi'l rise with sufficient velocity to overcon. i
back pressure in' the tube due tothe neat of.`
Letters Patent is:
.1. In a lam l of they type described the combination o an inclosing casing' having openings therein to admit atmospheric air, heatl insulating blocks secured in the ends thereof, an inverted burner tube seated in openings in said heat insulating blocks, and an incandescing mantle. surrounding the burner outletj- 2,', 4In a lam of the type described the combination o an inclosing casing having openings therein to admitatinospheric air, heat insulating blocks secured. in the ends thereof` an inverted burner tube seated in opeiiings said heat insulating blocks the ,burner outlet projecting below the lower block, and an incandescinsr mantle surround.
