Abstract
17,712. Fenwick, A. D., and Norwood, C. Aug. 2. Cutting-machines for collars.-Machines for trimming the edges of collar blanks and analogous articles are provided with adjustable guides h, h<1>, Fig. 3, against which the collar blank &c. is placed before cutting. The knife f, Fig. 1, is screwed to a block e, the surface of which is curved to the shape of the edge to be trimmed. The invention is described in connexion with a treadle machine having a plunger b depressing its knife f on to a wood platen d, of which the grain is vertical. The knife and block e both have vertical slots to permit of their being adjustably bolted to the plunger, which also has vertical slots in register with those in the knife and block. In use, when the block of the required shape has been bolted on the plunger, and the collar blank held against its guides, the plunger is depressed to make the cut against the force of a spring b<1>, until the lever c contacts with an adjustable stop j. The stop, by limiting the travel of the knife, prevents it from being blunted by cutting into the platen when the latter is of brass. After cutting, the treadle is re-set by a spring c<3>.
