Abstract

5800. Sargeant, E. F. March 10. [Cognate Application, 22,993/09.] Bevelling; splitting etc.; trimming and roughening surfaces; rotary and oscillating type for cutting rectilinearly; traversing- cutter type for cutting rectilinearly; guillotine type.-In a machine for bevelling the end of a leather strip, in which the bevelled end is trued or roughened by a rotating cutter carried on a vertical axis, of the type described in Specifications 16,171/05 and 19,975/06, a flat knife is provided for cutting the end in the direction of its length prior to treatment by the rotating cutter. The leather strip is supported on a table a, Fig. 1, which is pivoted at b and consists of a series of bars, each provided with a spring a<1> bearing on a cross-bar a<2>, which is supported by plungers a<3> resting on a counterweighted lever a<5>. The lever a<5> normally keeps the various sections of the table pressed uniformly against the bottom of the knife, and also keeps a clamp b<1> in its clamping position on the table. Depression of the treadle rod a<6> raises the back clamp b<1> and lowers the free end of the table a to facilitate introduction of the leather strip. The sections of the table are locked by side clamps in their relative positions assumed on release of the treadle. An additional clamp f is operated to clamp the leather near the free end of the table. The treadle is then again depressed to raise the back clamp b', and the knife c is actuated to cause it to travel in the direction of the back clamp b<1>, thereby cutting the leather to the required slope, but not passing completely through it. As an alternative, the knife c may be fixed and the table adapted to travel beneath the knife. A roller may be provided to travel with the knife c and to bear on the leather immediately in front of its cutting-edge. Provision is made for the ready removal of this roller prior to the action of the trueing or roughening cutter. As an alternative, a series of spring fingers may be provided for a similar purpose. If it is desired that the knife should not enter the leather directly it begins to move, the spring fingers n, Fig. 14. may be deflected and locked below the level of the knife by an eccentric p, in which case the leather is pressed against these springs at the original adjustment of the table. The eccentric is turned backwards to the position shown in Fig. 14 prior to the cutting operation. A cross-bar removably attached to the front of the knifecarriage may be used for a similar purpose. A deflector plate o carried by, and bearing on, the knife c serves to deflect the cut material and thereby reduce the tendency of the knife to cut too deeply. With this arrangement, the use of the presser-roller or spring-finger devices referred to above may be dispensed with. For severing the wedge-shaped strip cut by the knife c, a cutter h, Fig. 7, is provided, which is adjustably secured to the headstock which carries the trueing and roughening cutter g, g. The cutter his normally spring-depressed, and is provided with a foot h<2> which, when the headstock travels across the leather strip, is adapted to ride up on the inclined surface of the strip and hold up to the cutter h the part to be severed. In a modification, shown in Fig. 8, a cutter i carried by a pivoted arm i<1> is provided. The cutter is actuated by an arm i<3> pivoted at i<4> and operated by a link i<5>, which is propelled by a hook i<6>, secured to the bars d which carry the cutter c. A stop i<7> on the frame serves to release the link i<5> when the cutter i has cut through to the sloping cut. If desired, a packiug-piece may be inserted below the leather strip under the back clamp, and the wedge-shaped piece that has been cut may be severed at one operation by the passage of the cutter c right through the leather. Fig. 10 shows an adaptation of the machine for levelling or splitting leather. The table a is here replaced by a framework k provided with feed-rollers k<2>, k<3>, the former being preferably rubber-covered and the latter of steel. The cutter for trueing or roughening the sloping cut comprises separate horizontal and vertical knives s, r, Fig. 18, adjustably mounted approximately at right-angles to each other in a cutter-block g, which is adjustably mounted in a radial groove in the face-plate secured to the spindle g<2>, Fig. 7. The end of the strip, which has been engaged by the back clamp, is finally removed by a traversing cutter x, Fig. 7, of a character similar to the cutter h ; or the cutter i, Fig. 8, may be depressed by a lever y for the same purpose. In a modification, the cutter i may be mounted to slide vertically on guides, which are carried on the back clamp and are adapted to be drawn forward from the clamp prior to the actuation of the knife.
