Jacquards.-In a jacquard of the kind provided with two or more sets of vertical needles and two or more lifting-knives, which act in succession and hold the selected needles prior to lifting them, the needles 14, 14<a>, 14<b>, 14<c> are raised by lifting-knives 15, 15<a>, 15<b>, 15<c>, which are raised in succession by cams, either directly or through suitable connexions, and the piston of each vertical needle is controlled by a separate horizontal needle 8 provided with pins 13. The actuation of the needles 8 by a card takes place when the knife 15<c> is raised, and the knife 15 then rises to its highest position, the knives 15<a>, 15<b> rise sufficiently high to engage the needles 14<a>, 14<b>, and the knife 15<c> falls to its lowest position and then rises sufficiently high to engage the hook 14<c>. The knives 15<a>, 15<b>, 15<c> are then raised in succession as the preceding knife falls. The ends of the axle 1 of the cylinder rotate in blocks 3, which slide in fixed guides 4, and the ends of the axle carry rollers engaged in cam-grooves, so that the cylinder is moved to and from the needles 8. A bar 17 in front of the cylinder is raised and lowered by cams, which engage slots in the bar, and forks 22 on the bar engage pins on pin-wheels, which are secured to the ends of the cylinder, as the latter moves away from the needles 8, so that a partial rotation is given to the cylinder when the bar 17 is raised. Two pins on each pin-wheel are engaged by fixed fingers or bars when the cylinder acts on the needles 8, so that accidental rotation of the cylinder is prevented during the selection.
