Abstract
11,487. Gresham, H. E. May 16. Sanding rails.-The object is to clear sand traps employed on locomotives from obstructions. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a rotatable spindle b is mounted parallel to the passage c in the body a of the sand trap. At the upper end of the spindle is a valve plate d adapted to close the upper end of the passage c. At the lower end of the spindle b is a handle plate e adapted to close the lower end of the passage c. A spring pin g in the handle h moves in a groove i in the edge of the part f of the body a and serves to retain the spindle b in position. Normally, the lower end of the passage c is closed by the handle plate e, and the upper end is open. By moving the handle plate e, the lower end is opened and the upper plate d closes the upper end of the passage and so shuts the sand from the sand box.
