Abstract
9307. Feldhoff, W., and Manns, J. April 22. Smoke-consuming; spark-arresters.-At the base of the chimney of a locomotive is arranged a funnelshaped sieve k, through which the smoke and dust are forced to a conduit b, Fig. 1, leading to the furnace. The space m surrounding the sieve k communicates with the conduit b by means of pipes b<1>, and an injector a is arranged in the conduit b to assist the action of the blast from the pipe i in forcing the smoke and dust through the sieve k. The conduit b also communicates with the bottom of the smoke-box where the ashes are deposited. A fan with inclined vanes is arranged above the blast pipe i and is rotated by the force of the blast. Ribs r upon the sieve k prevent the smoke and gases from rotating. The gases which are returned to the fire-box pass through a lower set of smoke-tubes w to the tube x which is carried up the chimney. A reducer t for ashes, driven in the known manner from the axle u of the locomotive, is arranged at the mouth of the tube b.
