To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnnnrr DAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monscy, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark arresters and has special reference to a device which is to be utilized upon locomotives to prevent sparks from flying from the same.
An object of this invention is to combine a spark arrester with a device for producing a constant draft through the flues of the boiler which is operated by the exhaust steam from the cylinders.
The invention has for another object the provision of means whereby the fumes and smoke drawn from a furnace will pass through tortuous path in such a niann er as to cause the sparks carried thereby to be arrested and to drop into a receptacle especially applied to the engine for the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction and operation and which will be economically employed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the front end of a locomotive boiler having the i nprovement applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a lon gitudinal vertical section of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 designates a fire tube boiler of common structure which is utilized in locomotives and 11 designates an inclosed casing which is positioned at the forward end of the boiler opening into the tubes 12 of the boiler 10. A sec ond casing 13 is disposed at the lower extreinity of the casing 11 in which is mounted a turbine wheel 14 which is actuated by the exhaust steam from the engine which is con veyed to the wheel 14 through the pipe 15. The turbine wheel 14 is mounted u on the lower extremity of a vertically isposed shaft 16 which extends upwardly through the casings 13 and 11 into the stack 17. The shaft 16 is supported at its upper extremity i r l intermediately of a cross brace 18 which extends centrally froin the upper extrcinity of the stack 17.
In the lower extremity of the casing 11 and secured to the shaft 16 is a fan 19 which i when actuated forces a draft of air upwardly through the chamber or casing 11 into the stack 17. The shaft 16 is also provided with a concentrially mounted spiral strip 20 longitudinally of the shaft 16 which is reduced in the diameter of its curvature in the stack 17 and which is adapted to convey particles which are carried by the fumes and gases from the furnace out of the stack 17. The strip 20 is provided with a plurality of wings 21. which are employed for the furtherance of the object of the strip 20.
The brace 18 carries an upwardly extended rod 22 upon which is mounted a hood 23 which extends over the upper edge of the stack 17 and is rigidly held in position by the rod 22 to prevent the rotation thereof.
11 receiver 24 of inverted conical formation is disposed about the outer face of the stack 17 which flares upwardly beyond the hood 23 for the purpose of receiving and holding the cinders and the like which issue from beneath the hood 23.
In operation when the engine is set in motion the exhaust steam issuing from the pipe 15 plays against the blades of the turbine 14 and causes the rotation of the shaft 16. As the shaft 1 6 revolves the fan 19 is actuated and also the spiral strip 20. This action causes a suction through the tubes 12 and produces a forced draft in the furnace which is steady and effective and forces the gases upwardly through the stack 17 against the hood 23 and out into the atmosphere from under the same. When cinders or sparks, which are ignited cinders, are conveyed through the stack with the smoke and gases they strike against the hood 23 and are carried downwardly into the receiver 24 under the force of the blast from the fan 19. The wings 21 which are carried by the strip 20 serve to engage the particles which are conveyed by the gases from the furnace and carry the same upwardly through the stack 17.
The turbine may be driven by exhaust steam from the engine or it may be actuated by live steam drawn directly from the steam dome.
W hat is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described the combination with a boiler, and a casing mounted at the forward end of said boiler, of l a shaft Vertically disposed in said casing, a turbine wheel mounted upon the lower extremity of said shaft, a steam exhaust pipe mounted adjacent said turbine wheel for actuating the same, a fan disposed upon said shaft at the lower part of said casing, a spiral strip mounted about said shaft, a stack disposed upon the upper extremity of said casing, a bracket mounted across the upper extremity of said stack for supporting said shaft, a rod upwardly extended from said bracket, a hood disposed over said stack supported upon said rod and a receiver disposed about the outer face of said stack.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace, and a stack disposed in operative relation to said furnace, of a fan disposed beneath said stack a spiral strip disposed above said fan in said stack, a
plurality of wings disposed on said strip, a shaft for supporting said fan and said strip, means for actuating said shaft to cause said strip and said fan to force gases from said furnace through said stack and means disposed upon the upper extremity of said stack for engaging and holding cinders carried by the gases.
