Be it known that we, OI-IEsrER FoL'rz and l'lORACE LEON FULLER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Stacks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in smoke-stacks, and is particularly adapted to be used on locomotives in which the exhauststeam from the cylinders is discharged in the smoke-box to increase the draft of the engine.
it is a well-known fact that wherever a railroad traverses a wooded section of country or a settlement the burning substances which almost constantly are emitted from the chimneys of passing engines have been a menace to the forests and houses along the road, not infrequently resulting in disastrous fires, causing untold loss of timber and other valuable properties.
The object of our invention is to provide a smoke-stack of simple construction in which the sparks and other ignited products of imperfect combustion of the fuel on the grate in the fire-box will be extinguished before they are emitted from the stack into the open, thus practically eradicating the dangers hereabove described.
\Ve attain our object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section taken through the upper portion of a locomotive smoke box surmounted by our improved smoke-stack; Fig. 2, a composite view, the left-hand side of which represents a horizontal section taken along the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking downward, while the right-hand side is a section taken along the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking upward. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged vertical section of the upper portion of the smoke-box with base and lower portion of the chimney.

The smoke-stack or chimney 5 is composed of two concentric hollow cylinders 6 and 7, preferably made of sheet metal, the outer one of which is surmounted by a diamond-shaped top or bonnet 8, consisting of two truncated cones 8 and 8, placed one above the other and meeting at their largest portion. The inner cylinder 7, extending into the cone shaped top 8, terminates below an invertedcup-shaped deflector 9, which is suspended inside the bonnet 8 by means of ratlialLV-extending arms 10, which, forming part of the deflector, are secured to the top 8 by rivets or other suitable means. A wire screen 23 is placed across top 8, preferably at the junction of the two cones and a short distance above deflector 9.
17 represents the nozzle of the exhaustpipe, through which the steam exhausted from the cylinders is discharged into the smoke-box, while 18 indicates the so-called petticoat-pipe, which forms the conduit for the exhausted steam from the nozzle to the chimney. V
19 and 19 are two pipes, which, being suspended from the lower surface of base 11 by means of flanges 20 and 20, communicate with apertures 21 21, extending through the cylindrical portion 12 of base 11, while their lower inwardly-curving extremities terminate at points a short distance below the mouth of exhaust-pipe 17.
The outer cylinder 6 of chimney 5 is provided near its lower extremity with two or more hand-holes 22, normally closed byscrewplugs 2% and affording access to the annular chamber 15 when it is desired to remove accumulated matter therefrom or to clean out pipes 19.
The products of combustion having passed from the grate in the lire-box through the boiler-tubes into smoke-box Isl are drawn into the inner cylinder 7 of smoke-stack 5 through opening 16, the natural draft of the engine being augmented by the steam escaping through nozzle 17. When striking deflector 9, the heavy ignited partly-consumed substances which, with the smoke and gases, escaped from the fire-box are deflected against the inner surface of cone 8 of top 8 and fall into the annular chamber 15 between pipes 6 and 7 of the chimney, while the lighter products of combustion, such as smoke and gases, escape through the wire-netting 23 into the open. The exhaust-steam, emitted with considerable speed from nozzle l7,creates a partial vacuum in smoke-box 14:, the most perfect vacuum being obtained below the opening of the nozzle or the point where pipes 19 terminate. This fact, in cooperation with. the air-pressure in chamber 15, will cause the sparks, cinders, and other heavy substances deflected into said chamber to be drawn through apertures 21 in base 11 and through pipes 19 into the smoke-chamber, from where the moment they leave said pipes they will once more be drawn into cylinder 7 of the chimney. The above-mentioned substances, which, as explained, were burning when they entered the smoke-box, have during this operation been extinguished, in consequence of which, as well as by the friction against the walls of the various pipes, they have been reduced in weight, with the result that when emitted from pipe 7 they will, together with the smoke and gases, escape into the open. In case the sparks or glowing cinders are unusually large or not quite extinguished cum stances.
when emitted from pipe 7 the second time the above-explained operation will be repeated until the desired lightness has been obtained.
Having thus explained our invention. what we claim is The combination with a smokebox,a steamexhaust pipe opening therein, a chimney composed of two concentric pipes, the inner one opening in said smoke-box and a deflector mounted inside the outer pipe and above the inner one, of conduits leading from the space between said pipes, their extremities terminating below and in close proximity to the orifice of the exhaust-pipe.
