Combustion products, returning to furnaces; ashes, flue - dust, and the like, collecting; draught-inducers.-Relates to apparatus of the type in which an exhauster withdraws the smoke collected in the smoke-box of a locomotive or other steam-boiler and returns it, together with ashes &c., to the fire-box. The exhauster a, driven by a turbine which may be controlled from the driver's post to regulate the draught, is connected to the smoke-box by the suction pipe b and two branch pipes c, and to the firebox by the pipe d and branch pipes e. An ashcollector f, shown in section in Fig. 4, is inserted between the pipe d and the exhauster a. It is sloped towards the driver's post, and closed by a trap h, which can be opened to remove ashes. Funnel-shaped pieces i fitted on the ash-collector admit air to assist in consuming the smoke. The chimney draught is restricted by prolonging the blast-pipe g into the chimney.
