LOCOMOTIVE ASH-PIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1909.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 492.759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro Sran'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of .illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmrovements in Locomotive Ash-Pits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to im in'ovements in means for inducing an air draft through locomotive ash pits, whereby forward move ment of the locomotive induces said draft.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for this purpose, whereby the maximum amount of draft is obtained with the least expenditure of power, and my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l, is a section througlii a fire box and ash pit equipped with my invention, and Fig. 2, a bottom plan view of the fire box and ash pit.
Referring to the drawings. 1 indicates the ash pit, 2 the grate, 3 the [ire box, the
engine cab and 5 the boiler. These parts a re all old and well known. and may be of any of the usual or desired constructions. At the rear, ash pit l, is provided with a curved draft tube (3 connnunicating with the rear of the ash pit and terminating with a forwardly projecting mouth 7, located under the rear of the ash pit and being lla ring in form. At either side the ash pit provided with diverging and forwardly projecting draft tubes 8, communicating with the ash pit at about its middle. By this construction it will be seen that as the locomotive moves forwardly, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, air will be forced into tubes 6 and 8, passing thence into the ash pit v1, and up through grate 2, into the fire box 3, whence it passes out through the smoke stack in the usual manner.
Owing to the fact that the mouth of tube 6 is below its discharge into the ash pit, the heatin the ash pit, which naturally tends to make the air rise, will. assist the pressure induced by the forward movement of the locomotive to cause the air to pass upwardly through the grate. The tubes 8 being horizontal, the heat will not tend to resist the entry of air. The draft entering the ash pit through the tube (3 is met by the draft entering through side tubes 8, thus being broken up and distributed uniformly under the grate. This insures a uniform draft through the grate and consequently a uniform lire thereon. in this manner sullicient draft will be induced through the grate 2, to dispense with the necessity of using exhaust steam from the engine for this purpose, leaving the exhaust steam available for other purposes.
\Vhile I. have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of some modilication without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact construction set forth, but wish to avail myself of such changes and mmliticatimis as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Ilaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with the ash pit of a locomotive, of a draft tube extending from the rear thereof and having a fornmrdly projecting mouth located under the ash pit; and supplemental side draft tubes projecting forwardly from each side of the ash pit, substantially as described.
The combination with the ash pit of a locomotive, of a draft tube extending from the upper rear portion thereof and having a forwardly projecting mouth located under the rear of the ash pit, the mouth of said tube being flaring; and sup plemental side draft tubes diverging and [laring forwardly from each side of the ash pit, substantially as described.
ln testimony wherof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence. of two subscribing witnesses.
\Vitnesses JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs, Lonnrra PEN TONEY.
