Abstract

7 8 2 7. Varty, R., and Varty, F. L. April 3. Brakes; self-sustaining gear.-Relates to lucking- devices, of the type in which two relatively movable members are locked together by means of spring-pressed balls, rollers, or wedges in wedgeshaped recesses, and chiefly consists in providing large contact or bearing surfaces between the two members, such surfaces being drawn into contact by the locking-devices. The device is applicable for locking a winding-drum &c. to a fixed part when not being operated. One member, Fig. 1, may comprise a lever arm or wheel M and a boss A in which a circular channel B with a pocket or recess C is formed. Upon the boss E of the other member, Fig. 2, is provided a raised ring F which fits into the channel B. The two members may then be pressed into gripping contact by means of a pair of oppositely-acting spring-pressed balls, rollers, &c. D arranged within the pocket C. The lock may be released by means of a spring-pressed or screw &c. plunger K passing through the arm M, as shown, acting directly or through an intermediate ball &c. 0. Two or more pockets with locking-balls &c. may be arranged upon one side of the centre ; furthermore the balls &c. may be pressed apart instead of together, in which case the plunger has a forked end. The members A, E may be pivoted concentrically or may be arranged as shown in the Figures, in which the boss A of the lever M is eccentrically mounted at H<1> upon a pivot H, in which case the member E is constrained by a link, or pin-and-slot R, S, or equivalent device. The members A, E are held together by a coverplate U secured by a pin &c. passing through a hole U' in the boss A. Wear may be compensated for by making the eccentric, sheave and its bearing- surface slightly conical.
