- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DoLrr-r SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clatskanie, in the county of Columbia, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction-Throws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices used for engaging friction drives in any class of running machinery, and particularly to that class of such devices as are used upon logging and hoisting engines and the like.
The objects of my invention are to provide in a device of this character such an arrangement of parts as will provide great power for forcing the friction parts into engagement, will lock same in positive engagement without friction between any moving parts, will be easily disengaged, will be of simple and strong construction, and economical of manufacture and operation.
My invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing which therefore forms a part of this application for Letters Patent, and in which:

Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing, in which:
Numeral 1 is the driving gear mounted upon the shaft 2; an annular friction block 3 is secured to said gear, said friction block engaging with flange 4 of drum 5; a spring 6 between gear 1 and drum flange 4E keeps said flange normally out of engagement with friction block 3, and a cross key 7 mounted in a transverse slot in shaft 2 and engaging with a pin 8 slidably 'mounted within a central longitudinal bore within said shaft serves as a means of transmitting the engaging force from my invention to the drum, and sliding the drum longitudinally upon the shaft to engage with friction block 3.
To afiect the longitudinal movement of pin 8 within shaft 2, I use a device consisting of a casing mounted upon said shaft and containing a system of toggle arms and Specification of Letters Patent.

I am aware that toggle arms have been used in such a device, but the long movement of the operating lever necessary tosecure, by means of toggles, sufiicient movement of the drum upon shaft 2, has heretofore been a serious objection to such a device. I avoid this objection by combining with the toggle arms a system of wedges adapted to rapidly take up the lost motion between the drum flange a and friction block 3, leaving the final force of engagement to be accomplished by the toggle systerm.
In a preferred form of my invention, I employ a casing 9 screwed or otherwise rigidly mounted upon one end of shaft 2, said casing having a cover 10 screwed thereto. Pin 8 extends from the end of shaft 2 within casing 9, and mounted upon the end thereof, I provide a plate 11 of a diameter nearly equal to the inside diameter of easing 9, said plate being adapted to receive the longitudinal pressure of rollers 12 mounted in toggle arms 13. As a support for the fulcrum of said toggle arms I provide a cross-piece 14, of a length substantially equal to the inside diameter of easing 9. Said cross piece 14 is of open box shape, having two parallel sides 15, and two parallel ends 16. Orifices 17 in sides 15 receive pins 18, said pins being the fulcrum pins of the toggle arms 13. For the purpose of centering the cross-piece 14:, I provide therein a central bearing 19 adapted to receive the end of the toggle operating pin, as hereafter described. The toggle arms 13 are each provided with a pair of aws 20 having a recess 21 intermediate the same. Rollers 12 are mounted upon pins 22, said pins being journaled in elongated slots 23 in jaws 20 of the toggle arms. Transversely opposite to slots 23 in jaws 20 are orifices 24; adapted to receive fulcrum pins 18, and upon said pins 18, between jaws 20 are mounted rollers 25.
Toggle arms 13 are provided with longitudinal orifices 26 substantially normal to recess 21, and within said orifices 26 are reciprocatingly mounted wedges 27 Said wedges have a wedge shaped portion 28, a rectangular portion 29, and a cylindrical portion 30, thewedge portion 28 and the rectangular portion 29 being integrally connected longitudinally and the cylindrical after described.
For operating the toggle and wedge system, I provide a nut 31, freely mounted in cap 10, said nut having an arm 32 rigidly connected to some part of the engine frame, as by bracket 33 .to beam 3-1, as shown in Fig. 1. A threaded sleeve 35 is mounted within said nut 31, said sleeve having an operating crank 36 secured thereto. Mounted within said sleeve, and extending beyond each end thereof is a pin 37, said pin having collars 38 thereon adapted to engage the cylindrical portions 30 of Wedges 27 as shown in Fig. 2. One end of pin 37 journals within bearing 19 in cross bar 14, and the opposite end thereof projects beyond the outside end of sleeve 35 and a nut 39 is placed thereon. Pin 37 is rotatably free from sleeve 35, but is longitudinally a prisoner therein by reason of one of the collars 38 and the nut 39, as shown in Fig. 2.
a The operation of my invention is as follows: Upon turning handle 36 and thereby screw'35, said screw is advanced into the casing in a direction toward'jthe shaft 2, and
' together therewithpin 37 is also advanced toward shaft 2. The advance of pin 37 causes, by means of its collars 38 and the portion 30 of wedge 27 that is intermediate said collars, wedges to move longitudinally within toggle arms 13, and also simultaneously with such movement of the wedges causes a rotary movement of the toggle arms about the fulcrum pins 18. The longitudim1 motion of wedges 27 within toggle arms 1 13 thrustwedge portion 28 between rollers '12 'and'25: thereby causing said rollers to 7 separate by reasonof the slotted journal 23 of roller pin 22. Simultaneously with the separationof said rollers occurs a partial rotation of'e'ach toggle arm about its respective fulcrum pin 18. The effect of the combined simultaneous motions of rollers 12, and arms'13 is to cause a movement of plate 11,
7 against which rollers 12 bear, toward shaft 2, thereby through the train of mechanism comprising p1n'8,'key 7 and drum 5, causing flange 4 to move toward friction ring 3,
shown in Fig. 1,'the motion of said flange being relatively large for a small angle of action of handle36. When the action of the several'parts has progressed so far that cylindrical portions 30'of wedges 27 contact with theends of toggle arms 13 no further I separation of rollers 12 and 25 takes place,
and the adjustment of the mechanism is suchthat, at this point of the operation, the flange 4: is just upon the point of contacting shaft 2,
withfriction ring 3, while a further rotation of the toggle arms is possible. A further movement of operating lever 36 results in a very powerful force being exerted upon pin 8 by reason of the toggle action of arms 13 within cross-piece 1 1, and thereby flange 1 is brought powerfully into engagement with friction ring 3. Cross-piece 14L bears at each end thereof against cap 10, as shown in Fig. 2 and adjustment of the mechanism is obtained by screwing cap 10 upon casing 9, and locking same in any convenient manner. It will be observed that when the toggle arms are thrown into operating position that the thrust thereof is entirely confined within shaft 2, being received at one end of said shaft by the contact of flange 4 with friction ring 3 upon gear 1, and at the opposite end of the shaft by the contact of cross-piece 14 with cap 10 mounted upon casing 9, which casing is secured to said shaft. Therefore, when flange 4 is locked into engagement with friction ring 3, the thrust is entirely absorbed by the cap 10 casing 9 and gear 1, all of which revolve simultaneously with and therefore are relatively stationary, and thus no friction is produced between any running parts.
My invention may be made of any size and constructed of any materials deemed suitable and convenient for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a combination of elements and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my invention, I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and use same, what I claim as new is:
1. In a friction clutch operating device, a shaft, a casing secured to said shaft, a pin within said shaft adapted to co-act with a cross-key, a disk mounted upon said pin, a cross member within said casing, toggle arms fulcrumed within said cross member, relatively movable rollers mounted within said toggle arms, one of said rollers in each toggle arm being adapted to contact with said disk,
