7381. Clark, F. March 27. Ascension pipes; dip pipes; hydraulic mains.- To facilitate cleaning of the ascension pipe, the hydraulic main a, preferably of the section shown, is provided with chambers f into which the substantially straight ascension pipe b extends after passing through the bottom of the main. The bell k, adjustably suspended by means of screwed rods l and hand-wheels m, has a flange o which contacts with an asbestos washer e<1>, forming a tight joint to prevent escape of gas when the bell k is lowered and the covers g, n are removed to allow cleaning of the ascension pipe. Pointers (not shown) may be carried by the spindles L or wheels m to indicate the relative dips of the bells over the ascension pipes of different retorts. A good joint where the spindles l pass through the cover g may be obtained by facing the cover and wheels m.
