Abstract
100,516. Knowles, A. C. Jan. 27, 1916. Iron sulphates, particularly copperas and the anhydrous sulphates, are manufactured by atomizing waste pickle in a current of hot air or gas. Fig. 1 shows a suitable form of apparatus for the purpose. The waste pickle is supplied under pressure by a pipe 6 to branch pipes 7 provided with atomizing-nozzles and projecting through the cover 4 of a tower 2. In the upper part of the tower is a lining 1 of heat and acid resisting material, such as volvicstone, and in the lower part is a renewable lining 3 of refractory stone. Hot air or gas enters the tower by a pipe 8 and is withdrawn by a pipe 9 leading to a condensing- chamber 10 and a pipe 11 passing to a chimney. At the base of the tower is a reservoir 12 of lead, refractory stone, &c. for the waste pickle, which forms a liquid seal. The reservoir 12 is protected from the hot air by a diaphragm 15 of refractory stone, and may be surrounded by a water trough.
