Sluice gates.-A sluice gate is constructed of two members C, P, the former carrying machined jointing-surfaces E, and the latter, which acts as a piston to the former, carrying antifriction rollers W, which may be brought into action and the pressure taken from the jointing surfaces so as to facilitate opening and closing the sluice gate. The rollers are advanced by admitting pressure water or air into the pressure chamber, which may be provided with a mattress or bag M. The mattress &c. is provided with inlet and outlet valves Q, V respectively, and sometimes with an additional inlet N. The valve-rods and supply pipes preferably pass through the lifting-pipe R. The movement of the piston is limited by stops Z and its weight is taken by rollers W<1>. The angle-plate F and the sill D are machined to give tight joints.
