Abstract

4131. Soc. Anon. J. Cockerill. April 27, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Field carriages.-Relates to recoil apparatus of the kind described in Specification No. 6426, A.D. 1902, and having a supplementary liquid reservoir, which is placed in communication with the front end of the brake cylinder, so that when the gun recoils, liquid may flow into the cylinder to fill the space resulting from the withdrawal of the pistonrod. The apparatus is shown in sectional plan in the Figure. During the recoil, the liquid in the cylinder 5 passes to the front of the piston 2 through passages R and a valve 9, the space in the chamber 6 being completely filled by liquid which is forced from the reservoir 43 by a spring-pressed plunger, and which follows the path indicated by the arrows R<x>. When the gun runs out, the excess liquid in the front of the piston returns to the reservoir by way of a channel 8 and a cock 12. The reservoir and cock 12, and also a cock 11, are connected to the gun carriage so as to remain stationary while the gun is elevated about the trunnions 13, with the result that, as the elevation proceeds, the passage of the cock 12 is enlarged, and the passage of the recoil cock 11 is diminished; the length of the recoil and the speed of run-out being thus automatically regulated.
