Abstract

52. Spooner, H. J., and Penrose, P. O. Jan. 1. Screw propellers.-Relates to the feathering of propeller blades by means of epicyclic gearing operated by a shaft within the hollow 'shaft of steam turbines, such as described in Specification No. 3976, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Rotary engines &c.].- In the modification shown in Fig. 1, a bevel-pinion E fixed to a shaft B<1> engages with bevel-wheels F which ride loosely on the tailpieces G of blades D. The bevel-wheels F are prevented from moving in.the direction of the axis of the blades by means of a framework H, which carries change-wheels H<2> engaging with the spur pinions F<1> cut upon the bosses of the wheels F. The blades are screwed into the boss. The part of the blade spigot just emerging from the boss may be formed as shown in Fig.5, to prevent damage to the screw, and is fitted with cup-leathers to exclude : water and prevent lubricating-oil from escaping. In another modification, change-wheels are mounted on studs fixed to the spigot of the blade, and gear with an annulus on the boss of the propeller, the rotation of the shaft causing the wheels to travel: round the annulus and rotate the blades. An alternative method of fixing the blades comprises. a collar or ring divided into two parts bolted on to the boss and bearing an enlarged portion of the blade spigot. In further modifications, double stud-wheels operate the blades, or worms and worm. wheels are used.
