Pistons. - Packing is attached to the pistons of pumps, blowers, compressors, &c. by means of a metal ring lying between two annular conical surfaces which can be drawn together so as to clamp the packing in position. Fig. 2 shows one form, in which one of the conical surfaces 10 is formed on the piston itself and the other on a ring 14, which can be screwed into the piston so as to compress the packing 12 against the ring 11. In other forms, the piston may be made in two or more parts having bevelled edges which can be drawn together by means of bolts. The piston may be provided with a valve for use as a pump bucket.
