IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVE-WELL PACKI NGS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,598, dated November. 2, 1875; application filed August 1'3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I VINGENTE F. THOM- ACIGH, of the city and county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new'and Improved Drive-VVell Packing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional elevation.
The invention relates to the packing of drive-well or other pumps, and contemplates a prevention of the curling, which is the great objection to hard-leather packing.
It will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a pump-cylinder or drive-pipe in which works the usual valved piston B. O is the leather packing clamped between the flange d and nut d of the core or metallic ring D. I introduce beneath the packing G a metallic ring-support, E, coneaved on the inside, and bracing the leather 0 on the outer upturned portion, whereby the latter is entirely protected against curling.
It is adapted to any pump, but is especially serviceable on ship-pumps, as a rusty disused pump can be quickly cleaned, and without the usual labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is-- The piston-packing metallic ring-support E, concaved on the inside, and bracing the leather packing, as and for the purpose specified.
