Abstract

15,804. Yates, D. Jan. 14, 1907. Axle-boxes.-An axle-box for railway vehicles is provided at each end with a helical or volute spring or a pad of indiarubber &c. for absorbing axial shocks. Tho journal 1 bears against a plate 5 mounted on a non- rotary plunger 7 supported by a spring 4. The plunger has a flange 12 sliding within a flange 13 on a cap 6, which is fitted to slide in a guide 8 on the axle-box 2, and is held by bolts which serve also to adjust the tension of the spring 4. A packing 11 is provided to deaden shocks and exclude dust. Lubrication of the journal and the end bearing is effected by a wick lubricator, as described in Specification No. 15,805, A.D. 1906. In a modification, the cap 6 is non-adjustably bolted to the axle-box 2, and the bolts are relieved from the pressure of the spring 4 during insertion and removal by a central bolt connecting the plunger 7 and the cap 6. The usual collar may be formed on the end of the journal 1, in which case the bearing 27 is made to slide longitudinally, and may be in one piece-with the plate 5.
