Abstract
12,729. Rousseau, L. May 31. Melting-furnaces.-For melting steel and other metals and for converting pig iron into steel or soft iron in portable tilting furnaces, a crucible is dispensed with, and the melting is performed in a second chamber to which the gases are supplied both at top and bottom and in an oblique direction, so that the fused material is traversed by some of the gases and is also rotated. A cylindrical block f, in which is formed the second chamber b, is separated from the furnace casing g by a layer of insulating-material, and the chamber b is provided with a removable cover o having apertures for the escape of the gases of combustion. Air under pressure is supplied through a regulating-valve to a flue c, and, after traversing the fuel in the chamber a, passes, together with the gases produced, through flues m, n to a channel h and ducts i, and flows through upper and lower oblique passages k, j into the chamber b. A small duct p leads from the outer end of the duct k to the chamber b so that, when the furnace is tilted, metal which flows into the duct k is led back to the chamber.
