Abstract

12,006. Kerr, E. July 3. Metallurgical furnaces.-Relates to furnaces with a melting-chamber above and a " crucible " below, into which the molten metal passes, such furnaces being especially applicable for use in the manufacture of steel. Fig. 1 shows, in section, a regenerative gas furnace, 1 being the melting- chamber and 3 the crucible. Gas from one or other of the regenerators may be admitted on either side to the melting-chamber or the crucible, air being admitted by openings 16, 16. The products of combustion in the melting-chamber may pass away directly to the regenerators, or they mav first pass down the throat 4 into the crucible 3. Fig. 3 shows, in transverse section, a modified construction of furnace heated by an ordinary fire 14. In this case the crucible is arranged on one side of the axis of the melting-chamber. The furnace gases pass down into the crucible, and escape to the chimney through openings at either side, one of which is shown at 11.
