12,170. Fairweather, W. C., [Romanoff, W.]. May 24. Forging.-An ingot A is turned round during forging by means of a chain b<1> passing round it and having one end secured to a wheel B and the other end to the tup I, to a lever d<11> connected by a link b<11> to the tup, or to some separate reciprocating member. To turn the ingot, the shaft a' carrying the wheel B is braked during the rise of the tup by means of a hand, treadle, or elastic brake c, a spring L, which may be slid laterally to engage the squared part t of the shaft a<1>, or a weighted arm being used when the tup is working with a long but light stroke and the ingot is to be turned slightly at each stroke. The shaft a' is rotated to slacken the chain by hand or by a motor M. When both ends of the chain are attached to the tup and the chain is held out of the vertical, the ingot is moved endways on the rise of the tup.
