Abstract

16,598. M³ller, F. July 19. Force-transmitting mechanism. - The force exerted on the brake piston of compressed-air brakes is transmitted to the brake blocks through two levers, one only of which acts through the medium of a spring to move the brake-blocks during the initial movement of the piston, the other lever also coming into action afterwards and transmitting its thrust directly to the brake-blocks, the leverage being such that a comparatively long travel of the brake piston is reduced to a small movement of the brake-rod. An arm c arranged in connexion with the piston of the brake cylinder a is connected at b to the first lever d, which turns at one end on a piston f adapted to slide on a rod e connected to the brake-blocks, a spring h being arranged between the piston f and a second piston g secured to the rod e. The lever d bears towards its other end on the shorter arm of an angle-lever k, which is fulcrumed at i and connected by a link l to the arm c and by links m, n to the second operating-lever o, which is fulcrumed at o<1> and connected directly to the rod e. The Figure shows the parts in the released position. When the brake piston is actuated, the brakes are first slightly applied through the lever d and spring h, and afterwards also by the cooperation of the lever o acting directly on the rod e. The operation of the brakes may be further assisted by means of a pair of arms s, Figs. 1 and 2, which are connected at their upper ends to the lever c, and are pressed together at their lower ends by a spring t. The arms s are formed with teeth .s' adapted to grip the lever o, but are normally held out of engagement with the lever o by a cam r'. During the application of the brakes, the cam r' is rotated by a crank r connected to the lever o by a link p, thus allowing the arms s to grip the lever o and act as a direct connexion to the lever c.
