Abstract

11,923. Ellis, F. A. May 22. Tyres, pneumatic.-The tyre consists of hollow segmental blocks moulded to fit into a suitable rim and joined to form an endless inflatable chamber, a sectional tread being superposed. Each flange of the rim B, Fig. 2, is formed with lips C and from one is cut a flap H, Fig. 1, hinged or otherwise attached. Through this are inserted the segments N formed to fit between the flanges. Spaces are left under the edges C to receive the metal bases R of the tread blocks S. As each segment is ioserted, it is pushed along and the next one fitted to it by means of a ring-shaped piece K formed with a rib 0, the ends of the tubes of the segments being correspondingly shaped. If the rings K are dispensed with, the ends of the tubes are fitted one into the other. The segments may be directly inflated or a pneumatic tube with closed ends may be inserted, the valve P' near one end being brought through apertures in the last segment and the rim. Tread blocks S of rubber, leather, or wood are carried on curved metal base-plates R, which may have transverse and lateral walls to form receptacles for tread pieces, and are inserted in the rim one after the other to rest upon the tyre. A flat washer may be interposed beneath each tread block. In modifications, the treads and segments are made wide for heavy wheels, two series of segments are placed side by side, and the shape of the rim is modified by forming it with a continuous rib on the inside of each flange to form a bearing for the tread bases R in case of deflation of the tube.
