Abstract

11,883. Hall, S. May 22. Frames; motorcycles.-Relates to the application of spring devices of the kind described in Specifications No. 19,460, A.D. 1895, and No. 13,919, A.D. 1897, to the steering and driving wheels of motorcars, motor-cycles, and velocipedes. The various forms of springs may be applied in the double form to swivelling axles mounted in steering - heads forming part of the frame of a light motor vehicle or velocipede, the steering- heads being similar in construction to those on an ordinary bicycle. Fig. 18 shows a front elevation of the steering-head, and Fig. 19 a plan. The upper and lower parts J of the bracket carrying the spring devices are formed with eyes J<7>, which are bolted to the steering-post or are formed in one with the steering-head clips R, R<1>. The overhanging parts of the brackets J carry the field plungers on which the bearing box carrying the wheel axle slide up and down under the influence of the springs. Fig. 36 shows a thrust device applied to the single rear driving-wheel of a motor cycle or velocipede fitted with springs of the kind referred to. The cone of the axle t carries a roller s which bears against a projection u held rigidly but adjustably in front of the axle. The projection u is clamped in the end of the tubular member v of the frame. The roller may be carried by the frame and the bearing-surface secured to the extensions E of the spring device.
