Abstract

24,643. Leechman, G. D. Nov. 13, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Coupling, arrangements for ; passengers, for conveying.-Relates to side-cars for cycles and motor cycles, and particularly to the prevention of side drag of the wheels thereof, and comprises arrangements of the mounting, and means for driving the wheels &c. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 10, the wheel 2 of the side-car is fixed and the rear wheel 26 of the bicycle runs free on the axle 3. The axle is divided and the two parts connected through balance gear, the parts 29, 30 being fixed to the axle 3 and the wheel 26 respectively. The driving-pulley is attached to the intermediate part 31 of the gear. In place of balance gear, the side wheel 2 and the rear wheel 26 of the cycle may be connected to the axle 3 by free-wheel clutches. When the side-car has been removed, the power may be transmitted to the wheel 26 by screwing up the set-screw 33. In a modification, Fig. 8, the axle 17, carrying friction discs 20, 21, is mounted in a frame 18 which is drawn forward by a spring 19. The disc 20 bears against the inner periphery of the belt pulley 22, and the motion is transmitted to a similar pulley 23 on the side wheel 2 ; or the discs 20, 21 may be adapted to bear on the wheel rims 24, 25. Without making the wheel of the side-car a driver, drag may be prevented by allowing it a certain amount of longitudinal play within fixed limits 4, 5, Fig. 1, or under the control of springs 6. The axle of the side-car may be inclined at any angle to the axle of the rear wheel of the cycle, or the axle may be jointed to the frame of the side-car and the joint controlled by a spring. The wheel 2 may also be placed under the seat of the side-car ; when in this position, Fig. 6, it may be mounted on a fork 12 which can turn on its axis 13 either freely or under control of a spring. The side-car may also be constructed with two wheels and jointed in the front directly or indirectly to the cycle, its axle being connected with the axle of the back wheel of the cycle by means of a rigid or resilient distancepiece. If only one side wheel is used, the other side of the car may be movably disposed in a bracket projecting from the frame of the cycle.
