Abstract

14,884. Lawson, H. J. July 19. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to motor cycles and vehicles, and to driving-mechanisms adapted for attachment to existing vehicles. The road wheel and its motor, together with the driving- gear, may be secured to a fork for mounting in the steering-head. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the gas motor is carried eccentrically at one side of the road wheel, and drives the wheel E through the pinion E'. The spring F forces the wheel E and its clutch part D<3> towards the clutch part D, and has retaining-flanges F<1>, F<2> engaging the race G of the ball bearings. The parts D, D<3> are disengaged by means of the fork H, which engages with an annular recess on the boss of the wheel E, and is operated in the usual manner. Springs D<2>, to obviate shock at starting, connect the arms D<1> with the wheel rim. In order to take the pinion E<1> out of gear with the wheel E, a bracket free to slide upon the vehicle frame and having a slot engaging an eccentric may be provided. In a modified arrangement, the motor is carried centrically, and chain and sprocket gearing is employed, the motor shaft being carried through the wheel hub and geared over the road wheel to the wheel hub. A pair of such motor wheels may be combined or braced together, fitted with means for steering, and'applied to existing one- or two-horse vehicles. Steering is effected by a pair of long horizontal handles, or by a single vertical shaft and handle connected to the motor wheels by levers.
