Description

(N0 Model.)
A. J. SAMUELS. VELOGIPEDE.
No. 425,052. Patented-Apr. 8, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASSER JACOB SAMUELS, OF AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.
VELOCIPEDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,052, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed December S, 1889. Serial No. 332 ,482. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASSER .IAOQB SAMUELS, a citizen of the Netherlands, residing at Amsterdam, in the Province of North Holland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in velocipedes having single driving or steering wheels; and the object of my invention is the reduction of vibration. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the driving-Wheel of a rear-driving bicycle or tricycle, showing my improved method of mounting the said wheel.
The wheel A is mounted on an axle a, in the usual manner. The axle Ct is carried by two bars B, having enlargements 1) formed in them. The enlargements b are provided with slots b to receive the axle a, which is locked to the said enlargements 0f the bars B by the nuts (1/. Each of the bars B is mounted in two sockets O and G, formed on or carried by a frame 0. The bars B are adapted to slide freely in the sockets C and C and their movements are controlled by springs D and D, encircling the bars 13, the former acting between the top of the enlargements b and the bottoms of the sockets O, and the latter acting between the bottoms of the sockets G and suitable check-nuts E E, threaded on the lower ends of the bars B. The sockets C and C may be of the type illustrated or of any other suitable type, adapting at least one of them to be circumferentially adjustable and easily detached from the frame 0. The frames O are provided with suitable lugs or their equivalents, adapting them to be fixed to the tubular members of the frame. The frame C is fixed at such an angle with the horizontal plane as will place it at about right angles with a line drawn between the centers of the axles of the driving-wheel and pedal-cranks. By this means the tension of the driving-chain will not be materially varied by the movement of the axle of the driving-wheel with respect to the frame carrying it.
What I claim is-- The combination, with the frame 0, provided with a fixed socket, of an adjustable socket O, bolted to said frame, the bars B, sliding in said sockets and provided with the enlargement Z), normally resting on the lower socket and having the slot 1) in it, the removable wheel-axle secured in said slot, the spring D between the enlargement and the upper socket, the nuts on the projeetin lower end of the lower bar B, and the springbetween said nuts and the bottom of the lower socket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ASSER JACOB SAMUEIJS.
