Abstract

11,076. Banks, C. J. May 11. Ropes.-A triangular-shaped shield or filler is interposed between the strands of a wire rope. The filler is arranged with its rounded base on the outside of the rope so as to form a good bearing-surface; at the same time the inside strands are open to inspection. The inner ends of the fillor are slightly enlarged so that it is locked in position. If necessary, the filler is made double to ensure greater flexibility, as in the three-strand rope shown in Fig. 3. The filler is made preferably of steel and the central core of hemp. The lay-plate of the closing-machine is designed to keep the filler in the required position as the rope is being made.
