Driving-ropes consist of a core a of woollen thread which may be covered with a layer of cotton c ; around this central part, three strands B are twisted, each consisting of a core b of woollen thread, a layer of cotton thread c, and an outside cover d of hemp or other hard thread. It is stated that this arrangement diminishes the internal friction and causes the rope to become flexible and elastic.
