Gas from the producer A enters channels C' placed preferably below the surface of the fuel, and passes to the combustion chamber D through passages G<2> arranged alternately with the passages H<2> supplying air from the flues H. The passages G<2>, H<2> may be formed by blocks K, Figs. 3 and 4, a gas-tight joint being made by providing each block with a projection K<1> at one end and a recess K<2> at the other end.
