Abstract

1849. Ney, J. Jan. 24, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Void. [Published under Patents Act, 1901.] Ball bearings.- A ball bearing consisting of a single row of balls of the form shown in Fig. 1 is c o n - structed to prevent sliding friction by the application of the following formulµ a=c+d; b=c-e; a: b:: d : e, where a, b are the paths of largest and smallest diameter, c the diameter of the circle described by the centre of each ball, and d, e the diameters of t h e circles formed by the points of contact on a ball with the outer and inner ball races. The angles of the ball races produced according to these formulµ are approximately 90 degrees and 120 degrees. Fig. 4 is stated to show the application of the same principle to balls with three points of contact. in either case the outer race ring is divided into two parts a<3>, a<4>, which are locked in the adjusted position by a spring l engaging recesses h in the edges of the two parts. The ball bearing described is stated to be applicable to motor shafts, connecting-rods, hubs of wheels, change-speed mechanism, water and wind mills, turbines, polishing-wheels and lathes, and machine tools for wood or metal.
